nct course costs

I took the plunge and provisionally booked for an nct course, but the price has come up at 348!!!!!!!!!!!! There are only 7 sessions, working out about 50 a meeting. Is this normal? I was expecting a couple of hundred, but I'm not sure this is worth it?

That seems a bit steep! Were there no prices on their website? Either way, I don't think I would have paid that much. They're great classes but if you try to inform yourself generally (eg read books, bnb...) then there won't be much new. I know they do discounts for low-income families but that might not apply and I'd probably want to know why they're charging so much in the first place.

I have booked the antenatal course which is 14.5 hours running 2 Saturday's and one evening course. It is 9.40 an hour so mine only costs 136.30.

Personally I think that money could be better spent elsewhere! It seems really steep!

I have to agree with you. I've emailed them to ask why it is so expensive.

Here is a link for the prices per hour

http://www.nct.org.uk/courses/course-prices

As you are in London you are in Band C which is the highest prices. Look at your course and calculate the hours you will be doing. You also don't need to buy the membership which would reduce it by 40

Wow! That is so much money! We paid 120 for a x5 2 hr sessions, 2 years ago....

Do you have a nhs equivalent? I found my nhs course alot better and have made a great group of friends from it where I only stayed in touch with 1 from NCT (which is why I wanted to do the course!)

Yep London prices are ridiculous. My best friend raved about NCT, said it was the best thing she did. My SIL went for the NHS Anti-natal and said she's so glad she didn't pay out for NCT. With NCT everyone I have spoken to has said it's worth the money from a 'social' point of view but you don't learn anything you won't learn on here or at the anti-natal. I am not sure what I am going to do either, it's such a lot of money.

I took the course last autumn - it was 278 in London for about 7 sessions (I didn't buy the NCT membership). It pained us *greatly* to pay all that deserately-needed money for the course, but everyone we asked said the course is useless, but that it would be worth it to meet other new parents. So we reluctantly paid.
I would say that the course was absolutely worthless in terms of preparing us for labour and parenthood!!! Worse than worthless, I found it misleading in many ways. BUT the best thing about it was meeting the other people who were taking the course, we've stayed in touch and it's been great having them as friends going through the same things with the births and new babies, esp as some of them live nearby. Unfortunately you can't predict whether you'll hit it off with the other parents, or whether they'll live particularly near you....
If you choose not to take the NCT course, your local hospital hopefully offers one, check with your midwives. Or, all the NCT leaflets are available free on their website, you could read them there.
