With both my daughter, and this current baby (a boy) I am carrying, I had a private gender scan at 16 weeks. I use the 20 week scan as sort of "verification" but the private scans are pretty cheap and have a much more reliable success rate (I believe), so I would suggest if they don't tell you then opt for a private scan. You can look up the Babybond website to see if they do any near you. That being said with my daughter they did ask me if I wanted to know the sex (I knew already as I said, but they verified it) and shall be asking the same for my 20 week scan this time around x

We were asked quite early on in the scan if we wanted to know. If she hadn't have said anything i'd have asked as i really wanted to know!

I was told and she was great. I read there was a certain hospital that was sued when this couple found they were having a girl and they aborted and it was wrong. They won.

Its worth asking if you want it.

The hospital I went to with my first told me after I asked but he didn't volunteer the information until I asked at the very end. Even then he kept saying 'are you really sure you want to know?".

This time I'm at a different hospital (the same one as babyhopes2010) and they really are strict. They have loads of posters in the scanning unit saying not to ask. So we are getting it done privately.

I'm in Hertfordshire and with number 1, they wouldn't tell us as it was against hospital policy... in the last two years they have changed their policy and so they told us at 20 weeks that we are having a girl
It said in our letter both times about their gender policy. There were also signs up in the waiting room, first time saying not to ask and second time saying tell them right at the start of the scan if you want to know.

Yes we were told at the 20 week scan. I told her at the beginning we wanted to know the gender and she looked after she had checked every where. I don't think she would have asked us if we wanted to know if we hadn't asked her first though.

When she did tell us she seemed pretty sure the baby was a girl but she did say not to take it as 100% certain.

When I had my daughter in 2011 my hospital wouldn't tell me, however now they have too if women want to know as its not fair on some NHS hospitals doing it and others not so I shall be able to find out for free this time x

As far as I'm away of it they do.
My mum told me years and years ago they didnt tell women because not only was it not very accurate but people where aborting or doing all sorts so they didnt have the baby if the gender was not what they wanted - actually terrible and disgusting how any can suddenly not love their child on gender honestly!!!! But that was a true and main fact at that time and sadly maybe case to a sick minority these days
