Has anyone here started off with twins then lost one?

Hi i was just wondering if anyone has started this pregnancy with twins then lost one baby early on? If so will the one surviving twin be smaller than an avergage baby? I have just been to the midwife and am now very confused as to how far along i am!

It is possible about 25% of pregnancies start off as twins but by the time they get to 12 weeks one has disappeared - there is usually no evidence of the twin that has been lost at such an early age.

Why are you confused about dates does the midwife think that you lost a twin? In my expeirence they dont grow slower than singletons until the very end of pregnancy when they run out of room. HTH

Just my experience - I lost a twin at 11 weeks though baby probably passed a while before that. I had a major "gush" of fluid and blood, but no pain at all. My baby was over 7lbs when born, but all my others (4 of them!) were all over 8 and a half pounds. Also, I struggled with low amniotic fluid for the latter half of the pregnancy and was supposed to be on bed rest. In my mind I think the whole twin aspect affected things - lower birth weight, low amniotic fluid - but I don't have any medical proof. Also the amniotic fluid thing could have affected birth weight and be completely unrelated to losing the twin. I hope you and baby are fine and that the little one grows like a weed now.

Well i'm not too sure. I had lots of cramps and bleeding etc around the 20th June this year so went to hospital and they thought it was kidney stones (as i did not know i was pregnant at the time) i then came home and took a pregnancy test which came back positive. I went to the doctors the next day and they sent me for an early scan the following day. When i was there they said they could not find a baby and it was either too early on or i had lost it.
I then went for 2 blood tests to see my HCG levels and they were dropping. So i was told it was more than likely a miscarriage.
I have since fallen pregnant again and the dates (going from my dating scan) shows i conceived BEFORE i finished loosing the other baby.
So today i went to the midwife for the first time and they couldn't find a heartbeat as they were looking right down by my pubic bone. They then put it up higher and said 'oh there it is, have you had your scan yet' and i said 'yes' then they asked how far along i was (16+1) and they said i (me, not the baby) was measuring at 18 weeks as my bump was so high up etc!
If i am 18 weeks then that means i never lost the baby in the first place OR i had twins and lost one. Other possibilities are that i am just carrying very high OR i am just having a big baby. Soo confused right now. :S

Oh yeah the dates if i was 18 weeks would work out for me as i would have fallen pregnant on 16th June, started miscarrying a few days later and had the scan at 10 days so it wouldn't have shown up on the scan. BUT would also mean baby is growing smaller then average as my dating scan shows i should only be 16+1.
