PLEASE RESPOND: 22 week ultrasound

How accurate is a 22 week ultrasound?? My doctors never gave me an early dating scan just the 22 week anatomy scan.. how off can the measurements be? Can they be 4-5 weeks off? Can the baby measure 4-5 weeks behind without the doctors knowing or noticing??

I don't think the doctors would be wrong about the scan... possibly your dates were just off. The scans are fairly accurate and the u/s techs do dozens a week so they're pretty experienced.

Due dates are just estimates, its really a 4 week window baby could be born in... 2 weeks before and after. Good luck

Baby size at this stage can really vary, they shouldn't really be giving you a dating scan but more of a size percentile ... at least that is what they did for us.
Are things not developing at the right rate? Have you actually talked to your doctor yet?

Are you saying that you went for a scan at what you thought was 22 weeks and baby is only measuring 17-18 weeks? I'm not sure from your post.

Dating isn't accurate after the end of the first tri as there is a fairly wide range of normal. That's why you don't change your due date if it varies by a few days either side later in your pregnancy. As pp said they should tell you more about whether your baby is small or large for dates with a percentile, rather than give a new due date.

That said, 4-5 weeks out does sound like a lot. Don't know where I'm pulling this figure from, but I thought being more than a week or two out would warrant investigation? How likely is it that you've got your dates wrong? Are you sure when your last period was?

A dating scan isn't really a dating scan when your that far along surely? Midwife made me 13 weeks by my dates when I went I was actually 8 weeks so maybe that's what has happened to you? Are you absolutely certain your dates are correct? What has your Dr said?

If you never had a dating scan, my guess would be that your dates are off and you didn't know. If you really think that's not possible then it might also be that baby is a bit small at this stage (so was mine at 22 weeks but not by that much but that's because I'm sure on my dates due to having had a dating scan). The best thing you can do is see a doctor. Mine ordered me a growth scan in 10 weeks so you need another scan too if you're measuring that far off what you thought. But it is true that they can't really date a pregnancy at this point.

As everyone says it's difficult to know what you mean, is this your first scan? If so it's hard to date at this age. If you have already had a scan and the baby is small for dates that a different matter. Have you had a scan before?

It would be almost impossible to get accurate dates from a scan at 22 weeks. Baby is too big for them to easily do CRL measurements and that's usually how they date a pregnancy. Even if they could get them, they wouldn't be accurate as babies start to grow at different rates after 1st trimester. So they might take a guess at gestation just based on size and development, but it could be off by a few weeks. Similarly, your dates originally could be off too, so really hard to tell at this point.

I had a scan at 13+4 which was measuring spot on with my dates of last period, and the day I had sex. Because it was done in gynecology they didn't record gestation.
I then had my first scan at what would have been 16 weeks, but they recorded it as 16+6 weeks. There's no way I'm a week further ahead, I had my period, and I know the times I had sex. My midwife said they shouldn't go with the gestation from the second scan because it isn't reliable, but because no-one from gynecology recorded the gestation, she has to go by the measurements at the next scan. So my due date was march 5th, and is now Feb 28th.

That's a joke! Total bureaucracy. They CAN change your due date manually on the system, and they should do it based on your earlier scan. At the end of pregnancy that week could potentially matter! They could be talking about inducing you when you know you're barely overdue yet etc... ridiculous!
