Is it safe to get highlights?

I am almost 15 weeks pregnant. I know you shouldn't do it in the first trimester, and I know you should never get an all over color, but I have heard it's ok to get foil highlights since it doesn't touch the scalp very much.

Anyone know? I am dying for some summer color but I don't want to harm my baby

My hair stylist said it's fine as long as it's just highlights since they don't touch the scalp. Mine used a different type of product less was less potent since she knew I was expecting.

Yeah it's completely fine (my mum is a hairdresser), although if you're using bleach then try and use one with a low peroxide level.. I've had my hair highlighted once during pregnancy, and I'm re-doing my roots again soon..
Only problem is that your hair may not take the colour as well as if you weren't pregnant. xx

my hairdresser is a friend and although she used to work at a salon she just does hairdressing on the side now...she wont highlight my hair while im PG as your hair can react totally different due to the hormones. she did a few brown lowlights to hide my roots a bit, needs doing again now though...I asked her again the other day if it was ok now being in 2nd tri but she doesnt want to risk it. x

Hello! Im a hairdresser and have my own salon so i have researched this in depth. I work with Wella proffesional colours and there is nothing to prove that colouring your hair will harm you or the baby. The only thing they say is that your hormones do change therefore the colour may come out slightly different tones. (this has very rarely happened in my experience). I always say to my clients if there still not sure to have highlights as you say they dont even touch the scalp so no harm can be done.
Its a long 9months if we couldnt have our hair done! certainly cheers us up, So go for it!!! XXX

Highlight is pretty safe I think.

I had a hair mishap during this pregnancy, my hair turned brown instead of strawberry-blond. lol. So the weird hair color thing does happen, but I think it's really rare.

i've coloured my hair throughout pregnancy, and use a semi every 2 weeks. however i did have a pretty violent allergic reaction to my usual colour, so make sure you do a skin test! luckily i did, and it burnt through the skin and made a huge, painful sore which then turned into a nasty scab. xx

THANK YOU! I've also researched and found the same thing. My hairdresser alsow orks with Wella colors and assures me it's safe, as does my OB. Like you say, the only thing is that the hormones may make the color different.

So go for it!

i had mine done on saturday after a long 3 months....with roots to my knees. i worried sooooo much about getting it done but my hairdressers said the risk is more that the colour might react differently due to hormones, not that it will harm the baby. luckily my colour was fine. go for it you'll be fine.

I've used an off the shelf pre-lightener kit with a highlighter cap where you pull the hair through. It doesn't touch my scalp so no harm can be done, but I just try to minimise how much of the fumes I breath. I only did it once or twice last pregnancy, but both the colour and my baby daughter were fine!
