SIDS prevention - mattress wrapping.

hi ladies.

i was wondering if anyone has, or are intending to practice mattress wrapping for the prevention of SIDS?

Success of Mattress-Wrapping for Crib Death (SIDS) Prevention

Mattress-wrapping for crib death prevention, which has been publicized in New Zealand since 1995, has had a 100% success rate. About 800 crib deaths occurred in New Zealand during the years 1995 to 2005 inclusive, but there has been no reported crib death among the very large number of babies who have slept on mattresses wrapped in accordance with the BabeSafe mattress-wrapping protocol.
not sure whether this is common practice in other countries, but hadn't heard of this until i found it online a few months ago. any advice would be great.

ETA: information on the toxic gas theory here:

Dr Sprott states with certainty that the cause of cot death has been discovered: it is caused by very toxic nerve gases which can be generated from mattresses and certain other bedding used in
babies' cots.

The solution is to prevent exposure of babies to the gases, by wrapping mattresses in accordance with a specified protocol and ensuring that bedding used on top of a wrapped mattresses does not contain any phosphorus, arsenic or antimony (the chemicals which - when combined with fungal growth - can result in the gas generation concerned).

sounds good to me.. just unsure as to why it isn't more popular in the UK if it's 100% successful? xx

I've heard about this, mostly because my DH is from NZ.. i am going to do it and also going to use one of these wraps, which help to prevent the baby rolling onto tummy and getting caught under covers etc.

Surely gases that contribute towards SIDS would be banned from usage in baby mattresses?!

it's the chemicals used in the mattresses that combine with the baby's sweat creating a fungus, which in turn creates the gas apparently. xx
