Cravings - do you crave the foods that contain nutrition that you need?

I heard that cravings are normally down to your body telling you what nutrition you need/ or lack? is this at all correct? lol

That's what I heard too. That when women crave things its the nutrition that your body needs or lacks. But, if you ask some women what they crave - I don't think it relates to nutrition at all. I crave salty fatty foods. & some others crave sweets like cake and chocolate you know? So I'm not sure?

there's no real explanation for cravings and doctors can't explain them, there is the theory that your body is trying to make up for missing nutrients through cravings but there's also the one that its because your hormones are playing around with your taste buds so who knows

During my last pregnancy I craved prunes, and never once had any issues with my iron levels. In fact, my MW said my iron levels would be considered good for a non-pregnant woman. I actually do believe that your body will tell you what it needs through cravings, its just a matter of determining what your diet is lacking.

I do think it's telling you what you need.

Fatty foods? Baby needs weight, or you need weight to insulate baby.
Cheese/Yogurt/Milk/Ice Cream? Baby needs calcium!

I was eating lot's of fatty and sugary stuff to begin with-could have been the hormones??
But from around 15 weeks I have been drinking lots of milk, eating cheese and putting lots of butter on my bread.
I also got a strong craving for pickled onions and cut right back on the sweets- when I looked it up, it said about sodium requirement so maybe it all adds up! x

With my son it was mainly cake or anything with that texture, I dont think it has anything to do with nutrition tbh
