maternity and redundancy nightmare

just want to
there is talk of redundancies at work.
i've told HR but not my managers yet. thing is if they make be redundant before i'm 25 weeks then i'll just get redundancy payments and not any maternity, not even statutory. if they wait until 15 weeks before i go on maternity then they have to pay me maternity, but only statutory.
Currently i had planned to take my full maternity package which is supposed to be 6 months full pay followed by statutory plus about a months worth of holidays. it's so stressful, my poor baby

Oh no, sorry to hear that. I know it's hard but try not to worry about it until you know for sure what's happening - it won't do you or baby any good and, hopefully, you may not have reason to worry at all. Fingers crossed it all works out for you x

oh hon!! as worrying as it is try not to worry about it petal!! i cant believe the "rules" though - i was of the impression that employers had to really look after pregnant women if they were made redundant - i had no idea it was only past 25 weeks - thats awful ( & scary for you , it must seem such a long way off )

maybe you could speak to your HR dept to put your mind at ease???xxx

I certainly know the stress of money and time off!!!

The way I try to look at it is that we aren't given anything in life we cannot handle and everything happens for a reason. I honestly hope you're not made redundant. No one needs that kind of stress normally, let alone when you're pregnant

my work announced redundancies on 9th March which would be actioned in August... I got my BFP on 10th March! arrgh!

Luckily enough my work are letting me defer my redundancy until after my maternity leave, so i'm getting the normal maternity leave (i'm taking 9 months) then i'll get accrued holiday pay, then redundancy pay...

Could u see if ur work could offer u something like this?

Oh and i get to leave work early, on 16th August, i'll only be 27 weeks i'll get 2 months garden leave along with everyone else who's been made redundant before my maternity leave begins

tried that, she confirmed the above. guess i just have to wait and see but it's so frustrating, i would never have planned to have a baby without the 6 months full pay, we just can't afford that.

Bloody hell that's generous of them, my sector is in major cost cutting times so they will want to pay the bare minimum they can. sounds like you're in an ideal situation there, enjoy every minute.
If they defer redundancies until Dec onwards i might just be ok but we'll see.

That's horrible and I know must be very worrying, but try not to stress unless it happens.

I got made redundant last year and lost access to my firm's 6 months full pay on maternity leave. I wasn't pregnant then but we were planning to start a family soon and on that basis. I've got another job but will only qualify for SMP. I have saved my redudancy payment to supplement SMP while I'm off though so there is always options like that?

Btw it you've been employed for at least 26 weeks in your 'test period' (66 weeks up to and including the week before the week your baby is due) you would probably be entitled to maternity allowance which is the same as SMP (except for the first 6 weeks) - £124.88 a week for 39 weeks.

Fingers crossed everything is ok tho!

ok so its not set in stone, however companies have to be really careful about making pregnant staff redundant as it can be seen to be discriminating specially if a few of you do the job, dont get me wrong they can get round things, like last in first out who has had most time off sick (non pregnancy related) depending on how your company approach it they may do a scoring system based on certain transferable skills etc. so easy for others to say i know but dont stress out about it at the end of the day if its going to happen it will, ad stressing will do you nor the baby any good. i wish you all the best. if you want more advice etc try phoning acas they know everything about employment law x
