American Mommies....is the birthing room private?

How does labor and delivery work. Is it, generally just one room? Is it private or is it a shared room? or is it just shared with other people during recovery? I really am stressing over this as I want privacy during both labor and delivery and preferably recovery b/cI assume there will be lots of internal exams and breastfeeding.

In Florida the birthing rooms are private, however, you will probably share a recovery room, but I think you might be able to request a separate one, depending on which hospital you go to. My older sisters and my mom gave birth in Florida, and they were all given a private recovery room afterward because they requested it.

At my hospital you have a private labor room and a private birth room. I'm pretty sure thats how it is everywhere as two of my friends just had babies and it was the same for them. I think the only time you would ever share a room is when they are first booking you and getting your info before moving you into a private labor suite.

So they don't do any exams or anything in the recovery room? or do i just have to accept the fact I will be there in stirrups while the patient I am sharing the room with has her entire family behind a curtain next to me?

You would have to ask your hospital. My hospital is also a private recovery room. I think it depends on your hospital and possibly your insurance on which hospital they send you to.

At our hospital you give birth and recover in the same room...unless you have to have a c-section of course. The room we stayed in was totally private.
At the beginning of my third tri, my obgyn had me come in, and I had a complete tour of the whole birthing center, and we also worked out a birthing plan.
I am sure that if you talked to your ob they can give you all the details, that way you know exactly what to expect. If you a prepared maybe you will be less stressed?! I know thats how I am.

I think this depends on the hospital. Here in Dallas, we have lots of hospitals, and most are very proud of their private birthing suites and private post-partem rooms. My hospital has a giant private birthing suite and the post-partem room looks like a swanky hotel (they just did a remodel on them). However, Parkland Hospital in downtown Dallas is where people without private insurance typically go. I've seen a few birthing shows on TV that are set at Parkland, and it appears that their labor/delivery room is shared with multiple other beds separated by curtains.

Do you have private insurance? Have you chosen your hospital yet? What you need to do is call the hospital where you plan to give birth and ask for a tour of the birthing facility. Most hospitals will do this for you at your request and it will give you a much better idea of the facility.

I have private insurance (although its not top of the line) and I will be giving birth at Mount Sinai in Miami Beach b/c that is where my dr's are. From my understanding its the best hospital in the area so I hope that means fancy private room! I just am shy and had bad experience being sick in hospitals with someone in a bed next to me with guests all the time and no privacy I should book a tour, but its not like I have another option unless I want to change doctors

All the ones around here are private. You deliver in the same room you stay in so just one mom per room which is nice
