Slightly Lemon Shaped Head on ultrasound

Hiya,

so here i am again with my worrying head on.

A bit of background info , we went for a private anomaly scan at 19 weeks to which everything was all fine and dandy then went for the NHS one at 20 weeks to which we were informed babies ventricles were enlarged at 11mm.

We were referred to a fetal medicine specialist who scanned me for 30 minutes and stated that his ventricles were measuring 7.8 and absolutely fine, she said that he has a "slightly lemon shaped head" but however has checked for SB as this is a massive marker for it, and could not see anything to suggest that this is anything to do with SB she thoroughly checked him and then described this lemon shape as a "normal variant" and wrote on my notes likely normal prognosis.

She said she will scan again at 28 weeks to check everything is ok with him. Now i have researched this on the internet and i can not see anything about this possibly resulting into nothing ?!
I dont suppose anyone has heard of this and the outcome being normal have they? xxxx

As far as i know spina bifida is not something that is missed at a 20 week US. If indeed your bubs had this there would be no mistaking it. The lemon shape is a marker but its more useful in early scans like that done at 12 weeks. What happens is that if this is seen early on, before the spine if visible then they use it as a marker and order more tests like an amnio.

im taking comfort in that she can not see anything and i have heard alot of lemon signs being there at 10-14 weeks. She wrote on my scan, lemon shaped head but under fetal anomaly she wrote no obvious anomaly seen , i am sort of thinking she would have surely picked something up there and then being a fetal medicine consultant and all ? x

Unfortunately this is not entirely true, not to frighten the OP but I know several people whose children have SB who did not find out until they were born.

However - if the SB is a severe enough problem to cause major issues, for instance like my daughters - it is more often than not noticed before birth. Tegan had a very severe lemon shaped head at 17 weeks that was not present at my 11 week scan.

Hope you have gotten the all clear for your little one,
