How long does labor last?

Hello ladies,

This question is for ladies who have given birth before. I am curious for how long a typical labor lasts from when you first feel contractions to when the baby comes out. Please vote on the poll and feel free to post any specifics- like...
How long was the actual pushing part?

Also I am assuming the very first contractions aren't as strong. How far into your contractions did they become very painful to you?

How many hours did you have contractions at home before you needed to go to the hospital?

and anything else I am missing.
Thanks for the info.

It really depends, it can be from an hour to over 24hrs...everyone is different. But for me my first was 9hrs total, 10min of pushing. My 2nd ended in c-section. My youngest was 5hrs 45min...but from 4cm to him being born was a little over an hour...pushing was a total of 1 contraction so a couple min.

hi there, it varies a lot for everyone! My 1st labor was 36 hours from first real contraction until having him, i pushed for 1 hour!
2nd labor i was induced and it was 3 1/2 hours, with 10 mins pushing.
3rd labor waters broke at 9:30pm, labor didn't start until 4:30am, had her at 8:25am, so 4 hours total labor and 3 pushes so under 5 mins of pushing.

I labored at home with #1 for 12 hours and thats when i couldn't handle the pain anymore.
#2 well i was at hospital as they induced me and within 20 mins of the drip starting i was in agony.
#3 as soon as the first contraction hit well yeah, i had no break from them.

Each labor was different. The first one was by far the longest one. pushing took almost 30 minutes because I didnt want to tear so I wanted to give things time to strech.

that labor was about 14 hours from beginning to end.

the second was under 3, 3rd was also about 2.5 and my 4th was less than 1 hour from first contraction to delivery. 4th one there was NO pushing as the baby was coming on his own and we needed to find a dr!

they all hurt A LOT ... but the kids are all worth it!

hi, first contractions were at 1am, but just felt like period cramps until about 4-5pm, then got painful. My son was born at 6,45pm so the painful bit wasn't that long!!!

Every labor is different, but the first labor is typically longer. Mine were mostly 12-14 hrs long, but the amount of time I was in pain went down to 3-4 hrs with the 2nd-4th. My daughter's labor started off hard, and painful 5 min apart. I also had back labor with her but not with my other labors.

Number 1: 16 hours from the first "twinge", 10 hours of painful labour. About 5 pushes with suction= 9lb 8oz baby. I really felt I was dying with her, I was surprised how painful it was.

Number 2: My doc checked me at a routine appointment at 12:15pm, he said I was in labor.I had no idea. I felt pain about 2pm. Baby was born at 5:45 in 3 pushes with a hemmorage. (too fast delivery) SO...3hrs 45 min. 8lb 10. This one I didnt find too painful, I was quiet and focused.

Number 3: This baby was transverse till 9cm when the doc broke my water, making it the most painful of them all. Her head was in my left hip. Nowhere near the birth canal. I woke up at 1am, thinking "this is it"... By 9:30 I was 3-4 cm, and they called it "active labor". She was born after much drama ( I was so unable to focus !!) and vomiting and in three pushes, plus another hemmorage, at 1:17 pm.
So.. 12 hours start to finish. About 5 hours of feeling pain.

They are all different, the most important thing imho is to have a good coach and doctor and to remember to breathe and focus and relax the rest of your body.

Good luck.

unfortunatly thats like asking "how longs a piece of string lol"

everybodys different

my first was 28 hours
my second 4 hours

my sister went for 42

and my mum had my sister in 45 minutes

it all depends on how fast your body goes through the process and how much baby wants out
