Can i work with someone who has shingles?

Someone at work has just been diagnosed with shingles. They cannot be isolated as they wouldnt tolerate it.

Being pregnant can i still work with this person? I work in a nursing home. I dont think iv had chicken pox and my mum cant rememeber if i have or havnt. Any advice would be great as i dont have a midwife to ask!

what a selfish person you work with! shingles are very contagious and that person shouldnt be around anyone.

its strange to me that ur mum cant remember if uve had them or not as my mum remembers mine well lol
i dont think u should really be working with her but u can always ask ur doctor, u dont need to speak to a mw

Hi, I had the same - was exposed to shingles and chicken pox about 8 weeks ago. You can have a test done at the drs (just a blood test) and they can see if you have had it before. My parents weren't sure either (3 kids under 2.5 years, and I'm a twin so they couldn't remember who had it and who didn't!) so I had the test.

Thankfully it came back that I had had chicken pox when I was younger so nothing needed, but if you haven't had it, you can have an injection so you'll be safe.

I thought it was best to check, I hope this helps. x

Do not go anywhere near someone with shingles, you can't catch shingles but you can catch chicken pox even if you've had it before given your immune system is dampened during pregnancy. I work in healthcare and hav been around mumps, flu etc but i wouldn't work with someone with shingles.

My BIL had shingles at Christmas, my OB (and also my mother who is a neurologist at a childrens hospital) told me to go no where near him untill the blisters were dry. If you had chicken pox the chances are slim of having any problems, but it is not worth the risk. The only way to know if you are immune to it is to have a blood test.

I wouldnt go anywhere near them or the work place. Your employer cant provide you with asafe place to work during this time so they should put you on garden leave with full pay xxxxxxxxx

You can get the vaccine in the US for shingles...don't know if you can have it while you are pregnant tho. I would avoid the workplace in the meantime.
