Feeling sick after 1-hour gestational diabetes test

I had the one-hour GD test this morning. The super-sweet drink didn't taste very good, but I felt fine for a while after. But an hour or so later (shortly after the blood draw) I started feeling a little sick. Headachey and sick to my stomach, just generally feeling slow and fuzzy-headed.

Is that normal?

Is there anything I can do to make myself feel better now?

Thanks!

(Hoping I pass and don't have to go back for the 3-hour -- I know it's a lot worse!)

Didn't want to read and run but i haven't taken the test yet so i don't really have any good advice. Maybe try uping your water intake to see if you can flush some of that sugar out our your system faster? not sure if it will work or not. Hope you feel better soon.

One of the best ways to balance your blood sugar levels and to stop yourself from feeling so grotty is to eat some protein. Ideally meat, cheese, sugar free yoghurt, egg etc

If not, try and sleep it off hon. x x

I wish I could sleep it off! I am at work though and I'm pretty sure they are not paying me to sleep, LOL.

Thanks for the advice, ladies. I don't much feel like eating but you're right, that would probably help. (Just like being in the first tri again!!)

Boy, I'm not looking forward to doing that again! I was the same as you- got really sick and fuzzy.... bleh. I was really worried so I asked, and they said it was very normal. It took a couple hours for me to feel better, though I didn't try anything specific to try and relieve it

maybe it was just low blood sugar? had they told you not to eat or drink anything for a few hours before? i know i get like that if i dont eat anything for a while but also if im tired on top of that. im dreading the sweet drink. i told them i dont want lucuzade (not that i have ever tried it) because i dont think i will like it and am no good at drinking fizzy drinks anyway - they hurt my throat and make me feel bleugh. so they are giving me some sugar solution!

I was told it was OK to eat before the 1-hour (it's the 3-hour that you start from fasting). So I did eat a high-protein breakfast before my appointment since I knew there was a possiblility the sugar would affect me this way.

The fasting part definitely makes it harder! About 10 years ago I had the full 3-hour and I felt much, much worse than I feel now. I actually couldn't go back to work at all afterward and just went home and crashed. And I wasn't even pregnant!! That's why I'm really hoping I get cleared after the 1-hour and don't need to go back in.

I have not done my glucose test yet, and am dreading it cause i am worried of how i will feel after. But maybe you could try and choke down something with high protein in it. Hopefully that will make you feel better.

Hope your feeling better in no time. and good luck on passing your test. I have to take mine in a few weeks.

Update: I had a protein-filled lunch and gradually felt better.

But I learned today that I failed the screening and have to go back for the 3-hour test next week. Ugh.
