Prescribed hydrocodone while pregnant...?!

Last night I had a nasty fall and have barely been able to move since. I went to the doctor today and was prescribed 7.5mg hydrocodone. Is that safe to take while pregnant??? I'm sure it is, I can't imagine the doctor giving them to me if they weren't. But I feel wrong taking them :/ Has anyone else taken them while pregnant? Or know anything about taking them while pregnant? I've only taken one so far, but was told to take every 4-6 hours and that seems like too much to me..

I'd say if you're in pain take them, if you can do without then don't take them. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Did you remind the doctor of your pregnancy when he gave you the prescription? I don't think it's one of the "safe" ones like paracetemol is.

You've answered your own question. I took it whilst pregnant with my DD because of some bad muscle pain and it was fine. They just make you drowsy. 4-6 hours is a guideline. If you can go longer between, then do it. I think I took one every 8 hrs or so.

For a short term use (like you were describing), it normally does not cause problems, it is pregnancy cat C drug so while it hasn't been proven to cause birth defects, there has not been extensive studies to prove that it does not.

What normally causes problems is that narcotic pain meds like hydrocodone can be addictive, and when used as drug dependance or just long term use it causes problems for the baby when born. If long term use throughout pregnancy the baby will go through withdrawal when born (very scary and sad to see in person) and at birth the baby can have some respiratory depression as well.

You can always call your OB and ask as well! Hope you start feeling better soon!

that is a pretty strong narcotic. my mother who just had major back surgery is on that for her recovery. personally, if it were me, i would try an over the counter pain killer first like tylenol (your paracetamol) and see if you cant get some relief from that.

just my .02.... i hope you feel better!

Hiya!
I cracked a tooth last week, and the dentist of course wont even look at me until I've had a round of antibiotics- Anyway I mentioned to my OB that it was keeping me up at night and that tylenol was doing absolutely nothing for the pain and she called me in an antibiotic and a low dose of vicodin ( hydro)

I really don't think they would prescribe them if they werent safe, but I share your paranoia Basically as long as you arent using them long term you will be find, long term use gets your body addicted ( as well as baby) and you'll both end up having withdrawls ( sweating/tired/cold and flu symptoms/sore muscles) etc..
