my birth plan for repeat c section

Birth plan for : Mary Katharine Shoemaker

Elective C section

Patient of : Annapolis OBGYN

Support:

* I would like My husband, Rick Newman to be with me throughout the entire procedure

Pre-op:

* Please put the IV in my left hand.

* I do not consent to the insertion of the urinary catheter until after anesthesia is in place.

C-Section:

* Please do not permit observers such as interns, students or unnecessary staff into the room or to assist in the surgery

* I would prefer Spinal Anesthesia

* I would prefer for my arms not to be strapped down/restrained .

* I do not consent to my partner being separated from me even in the case of general anesthesia. It is important that the birth of our child be witnessed by a family member even if I am not in need of support at that time.

* I would prefer antibiotics at the time of the c-section to ward of possible infection.

* I would like to listen to my MP3 player to help relax me during the procedure.

* We would like to take photos or have a digital recording of the birth of our child.

* I would prefer a low transverse incision through my previous c section scar, and would like my old scar tissue cut out.

* Please do not use staples to close my incision. I would prefer double suturing of the uterus with dissolvable stitches, and steri-strips to be used in place of the staples.
* I would like pain medicine administered after the baby is delivered
* I would like anti nausea medicine administer due to a sensitive stomach to pain medicine

* I would like the drape to be lowered as the baby is being born or a mirror in place so my husband can witness the birth

* I would like the baby to be evaluated and bathed in my or my husbands presence.

* I do not consent to the baby being removed from my or my husbands presence at any time. If the baby must go to the NICU or nursery, my husband will accompany the baby at all times.

* I wish to be given a binder to wear for abdominal support.

Postpartum Care:

* I would like the baby to room in with me, if possible.

* I want the catheter & IV removed as soon as possible so I may get out of bed & start moving around.
* I would like to be able to eat as soon as possible after delivery

* If oral medication is used, I prefer orders to be written for me and to be woken up for timely doses (not waiting for my request).

Newborn Care:

* He will be stictly formula fed, similac advanced
* He will be having a circumcision

I only have a few more days left here i the 2nd trimester, so i thought i would post this for you ladies who are having a c section, i had one last year and there are something i would like different, ergo my birth plan. and luckily the NICU at the hospital where i am delivering has private rooms for every baby so my hubby can stay with him all the time ( since i will be delivering early anyway) feel free to use this or use bits and pieces.

Very interesting. My doctors are talking about doing a scheduled c- section for me as well due to my hip displacement and never thought of the questions I would need to ask or for what I should request to be honest.
My first son was born vaginally and I knew what I wanted for that and it was a pretty horrible experience. They did listen to my requests but after being in labor for 4 days and then pushing for what seemed an eternity I would like to be more prepared this time to make sure it goes as smoothly and I have a better experience then last time.

This is really interesting - thanks so much for posting your birth plan.

I have to get a c section as I have a fibroid by the birth canal making a vaginal delivery difficult.

I had no idea they strap you down? Did that happen to you at your first c section?

I'm havin a c section by general aneasthesia... I read the part where you choose that someone must be there for the birth of your child even under general anesthesia... does this mean people are permited to be there?? I would really like my OH to be there even though I know he's queasy??

WOw, thanks for this. I have been thinking about it, but had no clue even where to start. Kind of thought that a birth plan is more for natural births, but you have proved me wrong. THanks

you said he will be having a circumcision - does anyone know if this is given to you as an option in the UK?

jl. Generally, circumcision is not given as an option in the uk unless special arrangements are made. Emma.c89... Also when a general anaesthetic is done in the UK a birth partner is under no circumstances allowed in no matter what the mother wishes... this is because only serious emergency sections are done under GA. I know as I've done midwifery training. America seems very different if you can choose those things.

Birth plans are guidelines only and not followed strictly unless it is possible to do so.

Thanks for sharing your birth plan livebychance.
