Mummy - did you buy the baby from the shop?

Well the dreaded question has arrived! My 5 year old said;

'Mummy - did you buy the baby from the shop then put it in your belly to grow?'.

I answered 'No' you don't buy babies from shops.

Daughter 'So how did it get in there'

Me 'When mummys and daddys love each other and want a baby they just get one'

Satisifed daughter goes off to play!

What should I do now? Leave it at that or try and explain a bit better? Not sure I want her running in the playground talking about sperm and eggs!

HELP PLEASE!!!!

That's cute!! I think you have satisfied her question, so I don't think you need to further your answer!!
When I was younger and asked my mom where I came from, she said "daddy, God and I made you", I was about 4 or five at the time, and that was all I wanted to know!!

i agree with alexas mommy. You have satisfied her question so just leave until she wants to know more... fingers crossed she wont straight away! My 7 year old seems very horried on how the baby is going to come out. he recently had to be in hospital (swallowed a 2 pence coin) and now keeps asking" they (the doctors) are not going to break your tummy are they?" Bless
xx

i explained all this as best i could to my 7 yr old neice and nephew, and my 5yr old nephew... as they were curious.

I simply said, that when a mummy and daddy love each other, the daddy gives the mummy a gift/present - these are special tadpoles.( but boys only have tadpoles when they are old enough to be a daddy) The mummy has special eggs in her (which she has when she is old enough to be a mummy)and she puts the special tadpoles with the special eggs and then the baby starts to grow. Thats why a baby is half the mummy and half the daddy. Then the baby grown is the mummys tummy.

My neices and nephews were great with this and relayed it all back so they understood, and didnt ask any more questions!

But i would leave it now until/if she asks again!

It sounds like you've satisfied your lo's curiosity for now, but if there's anyone struggling with this one, there's a brilliant book by Babette Cole called "Mummy Laid an Egg" that explains it all brilliantly. It tells the whole story, but in a funny and accessible way: my daughter loved it! xxx

Oh and here's the link to it on amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mummy-Laid-E...7435778&sr=8-2

I think alexas mummy hit the nail on the head, she seems quite happy with your answer so leave it at that. If she comes back asking more Qs keep it simple but to be honest I don't think Isobel will. She's only 5 yrs you're right you don't want her knowing too much just yet. kids are so cute with what they say though love their innocence you want to keep hold of that as long as possible especially these days!!!

my son who is 6 years old informed that the baby comes out my tummy (which was correct as i had a ceserean) then he says but how does it get there mum??? lol i just said that mummy and terry (stepdad) decided they want a a baby so terry plants a seed in mummys tummy and makes the baby grow, hes never asked since lol so yes i think you have answered the question as well as you can and if no more questions are asked then you dont need to say any more. xx
