Oh and my waters broke so we went into hospital, because I wasn't contracting I was sent home so got the bus.. Was a little painful but it was the first bus of the morning so no one on it
I'm in Canterbury too! Are you going to ashford or margate? I'm a bit nervous as getting to ashford can be a nightmare in traffic...the high speed rail service might not be such a bad idea but only at times where it won't be rammed with passengers. We do have a car but he's very old and not the mist reliable :/
Ashford! Not lived down here long and I've not heard great things about Margate, although the new birth centre will be open by then. Really wish they would just open the birth centre back up at k&c! Plus we live in Wincheap so it's kinda straight there to Ashford... Although it takes 30mins on a good day, lord knows what it's like at peak time... My midwife wants me to have a home birth but not keen due to what haopened in my last birth. It's a hard one! There's a new birth centre in Maidstone if that's easier for you?? We've talked about the train too but we then need to get to Canterbury west which is the other side of town... It's far too confusing.. Hope I don't give birth in a lay by on the way to hospital : D
My options were Ashford, Margate or a birth centre in Dover. But when I saw a consultant she told me she would rather I give birth in Ashford- not sure why I know, I'm so annoyed about the birth centre shutting down! It's so daft that Canterbury has no place to give birth in! I got lost on my way out of the midwife unit the other day and ended up in the k&c birth centre...tbh it does look dingy and nowhere near as good as I've heard they're meant to be. Do you know if it's a complete shutdown or are they planning on refurbing and reopening?
I know I'll probably have plenty of time to get to Ashford but who wants to be getting contractions strapped into the car for at least half an hour? Plus I hate hospitals so knowing me I'll leave it to the last minute, get stuck in traffic and give birth on the side of the road!
I'm a bit scared about the idea of a homebirth too...if I had to be transferred to hospital it's quite a way to go and I'd be afraid for the baby :\

Ambulances are for emergencies hun, 'normal' labour isn't an emergency. first labours are generally quite long, you will have plenty of time to get to the hospital, even though it might be a bit uncomfortable (though from experience of being on an ambulance, it wont be any better, add claustrophbia and travel sickness to whatever else you are feeling )

if you have an complications or a previous precipitate birth then that's different.

you have plenty of time to sort out transport. family? friends? like the other ladies on here, find a taxi that the hospital has approved that are 'labouring friendly' good luck x

So by that reasoning, we should all be calling ambulances, because like taxis, normal cars have to stop for red lights too

There is no future plans to re-open k&c the East Kent PCT is currently reviewing their options, but chances are it won't re-open, they're also closing Dover BC. It's very frustrating as the only way to have a "Canterbury" birth is to have a home birth. We'll be ok... I hope!

I was going to say the same thing. Normally labour isn't an emergency. If you are in early labour and get an ambulance to hospital just to be sent home, how will you get back to hospital later, another ambulance? Its just not practical or a sensible plan x

Lmao. Well if I know i'm in ACTIVE labor- eg; water breaking etc.. I'll call an ambulance. if it's just pain and nothing extraordinary, I'll call my MIL.

Over here I can get an ambulance and have it reimbursed - as LONG AS it's the real deal! If it's a false alarm I have to pay. Fingers crossed I don't get it wrong.

We do not have a car. We will be going up to the army base where the hospital is located (an hour- an hour 1/2 away) a few days before my due date and staying in a hotel. We are hoping she comes around then (or on my due date) because if she does not we are going to be stuck. We are taking either the bus or the subway. (Probably the bus. It is sometimes hard to get a seat on the subway.)

I am determined for her to be born at the army hospital though. So scared for her to be born off post. :/ (as we are in Korea)

We will have to see what happens though. The hospital is only about 1/2 a mile or a mile from the hotel so when the time comes we will be able to take a taxi, bus, or walk (hopefully) to the hospital.
