Both these movies freaked me out. We only have one option for a hospital in our city - I live in Saskatchewan Canada. but I have been asking everyone about their experiences and so far so good. If anything I think the movies have taught me to make sure I know what I want (no c section unless REALLY necessary) and make sure anyone that is there with me knows what I want. the health region has a midwife program now, so I might go that way too..

I dont know, I gave birth in America and loved it. I felt like I was a guest at a 5 star hotel. The nurses were amazing, the room incredible. I was given many options. I was put in a room without a tub, and as soon as my husband said I wanted to be in the bath for pain control, they moved me. I didnt want a water birth, but they have a water birth room. They didnt pressure me for an epidural, but merely asked if I knew what I wanted a couple of times. Also, when I called to make my first appt, the first thing they asked was "do you want an OB or a midwife? Do you know the difference?" so maybe it is where you are rather than the country as a whole. None of my friends who have given birth in America have ever complained, so

Honestly, that is all I want: to have options. It was an eye-opener to learn about the link between pitocin, epidurals and (otherwise unnecessary) c-sections. So, going back to my original point, Jessica you seem to agree that in Vermont we are given options. I didn't feel like those horror stories they talked about in the movies quite apply to where we live. I guess we're lucky.

Loved the Business of Being born! It definitely inspired me, as a young, healthy, low risk pregnant woman, to initiate prenatal care and plan delivery at a free standing birthing center near where we live.

I love that I see a small group of certified nurse midwives who give me all the time in the world, and most importantly don't hesitate to transfer women to a hospital when medical intervention is necessary.

Hi, Little Mamana. It's been snowing all day. It's going to be a white xmas after all
I love that some of us are from the same region. I am originally from Argentina, though, but VT is my adopted home. Hubby was born and bred here.

I wasn't given a choice for a midwife, the hospital here in oregon is dead against baths and water births. My mom wasn't given a choice to deliver naturally, she had to have a c-section her first, then the rest they told her she would have to be cut since her first was a c-section. I've heard a lot of horror stories, and a lot of women who didn't enjoy their birth but didn't understand that there were other options for them. Sounds like you live somewhere nice, but not everywhere is like that.

Thanks for the reminder about this movie. I have finally requested it from the library - looking forward to it!
