I think it is bloody rude! The emphasis they put on weight is crazy. Of course it's healthier to be your ideal weight but not everyone is and just because you're bigger doesn't mean you're going to have a hard time in child birth and have an obese child. I have a high BMI and I've not had a problem with blood pressure, hearing babies heartbeat or getting a clear scan etc. I think they should try harder on helping women give up cigarettes, alcohol and drugs first. Smoking in front of your newborn/child is a lot more harmful than food, not that I eat unhealthy.. I'm the biggest fruit/veggie person.. ugh.. rant over!!

i agreee!!! so true!!

i know a woman who is not my size of course, she is a few weeks earlier then me in pregnancy and at new years eve, sat in the pub drinking pint after pint and smoking up a storm, and yet excited to be pregnant, i bet no one is giving her a hard time or making her go to all sorts of appointments!

Same, my SIL smoked with both of hers.. I couldn't be around her.. I think it's so selfish to not even try and give up. Her first LO had a bunch of problems when he was born and she still didn't try and quit for her second and she didn't get any grief! I smoked up to 20 a day and gave up straight away cold turkey and won't go back now as I think second hand smoke is just as bad. It's the cooking classes that get to me, my gosh.. do they think just because you're not skinny that you're stupid? NHS should put their money on something more worth while x

Same with OH's mum and nan, they both smoked and feel there was nothing wrong with their babies blah blah.
We know all the risks now so why would you even risk it? Some people do smoke and manage to have perfectly happy babies but I couldn't live with the guilt and fear with every cigarette knowing that it's cutting off my babies oxygen, ugh!
There was some lady on a programme not long ago saying she smokes more when she's pregnant because she thinks it will make her baby's lungs stronger... err don't think it works that way love!! Maybe they should spend the money on re-educating silly people like that!

How bloody rude !! Some people think their profession gives them a right to be rude. You want their PROFESSIONAL opinion. It's a load of rubbish, you look as though you have 2 very healthy sons and a healthy little girl on the way so they can shut up xo

wow reading through all the posts i cannot believe how some of you ladies have been treated!! I Have a BMI of 39 and my midwife has not said a thing apart from asking me to go to group session for the larger ladies and that i would be referred to an anaesthetist at a later date. I was also referred to a obstetrician who i had first meeting with last week and he said nothing apart from having two extra scans to check babys growth?!
I find it unbelievable that they have treated some you ladies so bad making you feel bad for something that is hard to deal with anyway let alone throughout pregnancy!
I didnt go to this group session either and nothing has been mentioned! I think as long as your not putting yourself or baby at risk they need to take a step back and stop stressing mums out about losing weight, i would be so stressed if i had to watch what i eat consistantly all day every day, and in my eyes stresss is much worse than being a larger lady for your baby!
Try not to let them get you down, keep head high and be proud to be a cuddly mummy! i know i will be!
