Unsure about antibiotic cream prescribed by doctor...Possibly TMI

Hey,

I recently had a swab done and found out I have BV. The doctor prescribed me with an internal vaginal cream which I am supposed to use every night for 7 days. The things is I feel really uncomfortable using this. It wasnt my regular dr and at the appointment he had to look in a book as he was unsure and the leaflet says to 'only use in pregnancy if the benefits of the mother outweigh the risks of the baby'. I took the box and leaflet to my midwife appointment this week but she didn't look at it and just said if the dr prescribed it it will be fine.

I reluctantly started using it 2 nights ago as my OH feels very concerned about the effects of not treating the BV (apparently it can cause pre term labor and low birth weight) but I can't stop worrying and find myself even more obsessed with my baby's movements for reassurance. I dread going to bed because I have to take it again. If I wasn't pregnant it wouldn't bother me I'd take it without question but I am so scared of harming my baby. Then tonight I did some research and everything I have read says it is not recommended in pregnancy at all. Now I don't know what to do. Do I continue to use it because the dr prescribed it or do I stop using it and risk the infection?? Xx

The doctor wouldnt have given you it if it was unsafe. Im currently taking antibiotics. It says on the leaflet that the stuff will pass through to the placenta during pregnancy and if taking whilst breast feeding the antibiotic stuff will pass through the milk!

I feel awful about it but the doctor checked what I could and couldnt take and these were the best ones...! Im scared every time I take one as I know my baby is literally taking them too.

Yes, you continue to take it. It is better to treat the BV than to leave it untreated. And the Doctor would not prescribe you something that would harm your baby. Sometimes you have to trust in your Doctor, and not believe so much in the Internet. That will scare you even more. I had BV at my 8 week appointment and also had to use the internal cream for 5 days. Everything is fine, the BV is gone..and baby is as healthy as can be. Trust that it works, and continue to take it. Best of luck to you!!

Not a problem at all. Just continue to use it as prescribed and it'll be gone before you know it. Again, best of luck.

This confuses me as well, because at my 8 week appointment my Dr discovered I had BV, she asked if I had any symptoms and I said no, and she said if I don't have symptoms it's better to not treat it than to risk using the antibiotics? I trust my Dr but it does worry me!

I think maybe it was because it perhaps wasnt severe enough along with you being so early on in your pregnancy at the time. The leaflet for the cream I have says not to be used in early pregnancy. Maybe your dr felt it would clear up on it own (which I have read it can). I know what you mean though they only discovered mine because I had thrush but I think if your dr thought it was a concern he/she would have treated you. Mine had got pretty bad xx
