Baby Food? Sweets etc? What are your plans?

An ex colleague always made her own food for her babies, and I mean always. She never once fed either of the babies shop bought baby food.

Also her little girl of 6 has never eaten a chocolate or sweet. She is allowed cake but that is it. Otherwise no sugary food/drink whatsoever. This applies to her 2 year old as well.

I do admire this but I find it way too extreme for me. Do you have any strong views on what you will feed your LO/what you already feed your LOs.

I know I will try and make sure mine eats as healthily as possible but I won't be harsh at all about treats and I know it sounds terrible but I am not going to be one of those Mothers that is totally against the odd mcdonalds when she/they are 3 yrs old+.

Im going to be quite strict. I imagine the majority of the time I will make babys food and will ensure it has a varied diet. I wont be feeding my LO chocolate on any kind of regular basis either. (Im one of those that detests the idea of feeding a 3 year old McDonalds. I dont see why there is any need to feed your child crap when it knows no different and would be just as happy with something healthy. Each to their own though. I dont care what other people do with their children as its none of my business.) My niece is 9 and nephew is 6 and they have never eaten McDonalds or any other kind of fast food. x

I'd like to try and make home made baby food using organic veggies if poss, rather than buy the jarred stuff. Saying that, i'm not completely opposed to the jars altogether as it's handy to have a couple stashed in the cupboard for those moments where you just don't have time to make your own.

I also want to get baby used to eating all sorts of different food. When I was young I used to like really strange things like avocado, artichoke, stilton, asparagus! My mum said she would always say to me "no, you wont like that" and then was always surprised when I ate it and wanted more.

I'm the same as you though, I wouldn't be opposed to my child eating a Macdonalds once in a while as a treat.

I want to be strict and I aim to be but I just worry that I won't be able to keep it up! Don't get me wrong, I am going to do my absolute best to discourage baby discovering sweets/chocolate and I will ensure that she eats loads of nutritional food as much as possible to give her the best start.

But I know I won't be the kind of Mum that won't allow my daughter to go to a party just because they are having mcdonalds or won't allow her to accept a party bag because it has a packet of sweets in it - like my ex colleague. I sometimes think being like that can end up making the child go crazy when she/he discovers all of these treats when they are a bit older!

When my ds was little I did make all of his food....I had loads of purees frozen in the freezer.....it was so easy to just pop out as many cubes as needed and heat them up. He is a fantastic eater now and other than just one or two things he will eat anything including sweet and sours or curries. He also had the occasional jar when we were out though. His absolute favourite is garlic bread and prawns. But he does have the occasional MacDonalds and he has eaten in quite a variety of other restaurants.

I think its all down to personal choice. I have a friend who claims her 3 yr old won't eat anything but nuggets and chips for dinner or toast. But then she just gives him that and finds it odd that I'll encourage mine to eat different foods.

I plan on making my own baby food, mostly cause i know what is going in it... and I want the baby/toddler to get used to food I normally make

Fastfood will only be a treat, cause I know its not healthy... also already I have a no pop/soda rule in the house. Only when going out to eat.

I would most likely lower my kids intake of sugary stuff but I wouldn't say no all together.

Yeah same here, I will try my best but won't rule jarred food out. I think a healthy balance is good.

That is really good that you were an adventurous eater. My OH is Turkish and although he only loves good old English food, my MIL sometimes makes Turkish meals and it will be great for my LO to experience different foods.

My SS was eating nuts when he was two years old (I bet SS's Mum would love to know that, not! She'd go mad if she found out!) as in the Turkish culture they don't worry so much about that - in fairness nuts are healthy and they don't want to instill silly fears into the child I guess about choking. But I won't be having that with my LO, nuts can wait until she is older thanks!

That is the worst isn't it, when parents insist that their child will only eat certain (bad) foods. But it is because they have never encouraged them to eat anything healthy!

One of my cousins used to feed her kids microwave sausages for dinner and those frozen, ready made microwave £1.50 roast dinners. It made me so sad seeing those kids walking around eating those disgusting processed sausages.

i will make my own. Its super easy and cheap. i don't plan on feeding my baby any junk food or fast foods. I was raised that way to so I think it will be easier since I grew up with very healthy whole foods.
