A question for people who have had their 20 wk scan

I have my 20 wk scan on Thursday and I'm a little bit nervous. What will they look for and do they talk you through it or just mutter to themselves? At my 12 wk the sonographer kept talking numbers to another nurse and being a control freak and wanting to know everything it drove me a bit nuts and I had to google every number shed mentioned straight after!

What can I expect basically? X

The sonographer who did my 12-wk and 20wk scan were the same person. My hospital is small, it's a clinic, that's why I had the same guy.
He explained to me what my husband and I were looking at on the screen (head, limbs, spine, heart, etc etc). When he was taking measurements, he didn't talk much. I don't really care about measurements though, as long as the baby grows on schedule. My scan was about 45 mins long.

If your hospital is small, big possibility you will have the same sonographer as your previous scan.

I got a different sonographer each time. I think they are all different as Ive heard some dont talk you through it etc. Mine gave me a running commentary of what we were looking at (babys lips, nose, heart valves, kidneys etc etc. Very relieving. I asked loads too (never be afraid to ask stuff as you will kick yourself once out and wish you had.) x

It really depends on the person doing it but if they're not talking you through it don't be afraid to ask! They spend a long time getting measurements and if LO isn't in the right position it may take a lot of coughing or moving around before they're happy so don't panic if it seems to be going wrong!

At mine she took ages to get a view of the heart to make sure all chambers were working so I was rocked around a lot and of course me and OH both started worrying there was a problem but it was just LO being awkward! She also couldn't find a bladder but apparently at this stage they empty and refill their bladders every 20mins so by the end of the scan when it wasn't empty we could see it easily.

Weird how everywhere different. I was specifically told not to drink anything more than normal as it can affect how easily they can do the scan! x

Oh also, make sure you ask early on if you want to know the sex. We just expected her to ask us and she didn't so ended up just having a fleeting look at the end and we weren't at all convinced she wasn't just guessing so ended up having a private gender scan

At my 20 week scan the sonographer did explain what we were looking at on the screen, and some of the things she was measuring. During some of the measuring she was quiet. It didnt really bother me, because I figured I wouldnt really understand a lot of it anyway, but she did explain what seemed important! Also, she told me she was not able to say what is normal/not normal, and that it was the doctors job to review the scan info and call me with the results.
