Can thrush or any other vaginal infection harm the baby?

My doctor yesterday said she thinks me pain I have been having down below is related to an external infection. She examined me and said (sorry if this is tmi!) I am very red and inflamed down there. She is sure it's thrush but took a swab to send off to rule out any other infection.

I am still in considerable pain, I feel burning and stinging constantly down there and cream isn't helping. I have heard mixed information about whether infections can harm the unborn baby, some say yes and others say no. I forgot to ask the doctor yesterday! I am just terrified the infection could travel up and cause pre-term labour or something.

Does anyone know?

Thrush cant. I would imagine doc would have given you something straight away if something else could be harmful. Dont worry. x

Hi didn't want to R&R. I'm not really sure but I wouldn't think that thrush could harm the baby seen as it's common for pregnant women to get it more often during pregnancy.

I think thrush is pretty common in pregnancy and harmless. There is another infection called Bacterial Vaginosis which can be harmful if untreated but even then the risk is small, and if the doc thinks it looks like thrush it most probably will be. Try not to worry

i suppose any infection left untreated could cause further problems but thrush is very common in pregnancy and easily treated so as long as you get it seen too (as you have done) then there should be no further complications although it could flare up again but the doc will keep you right x

As far as I know thrush can't during pregnancy as it is an external infection. However, my Mam developed it just before I was born and had it during birth and I developed it in my mouth just after birth, but doc told my Mam I had gotten it during the birth....been plauged with it ever since!

The problem I have with this is BV is so so similar to thrush. I used to suffer from chronic thrush before my DS. I would always treat it naturally. I finally went to the dr because it wasn't getting better on its on and it turned out to be BV. Incidentally, that's how I found out I was pregnant with DS. We tried for three and a half years and gave up so no I didn't think I was pregnant lol.

Typically an infection would only affect the baby during birth, not during the pregnancy. And they usually test you for things that would affect the baby during birth, like beta strep, as well as certain STDs, yeast, thrush, etc especially if you mention symptoms of anything.

I have thrush at the moment, with no irritation at all. MW told me to flush it out with water, soo must be fine.

Hi I don't want to be a scare monger but infections such as trush can't harm the baby directly but can be the cause of preterm labour. I know this because they don't know why I've had two preterms and so this time they are throwing everything at me this includes blood screening for infections and two courses of clindamycin cream (one at 16wks one at 22wks) which is effectively is thrush cream. The thing is you've sought help and they are on top of it so I would imagine it is very unlikely that you will suffer any significant problems from it. I think if you look in premature section on here there is an article at the top about thrush and prem birth xx
