I think that is one of the benefits of being a second time mum...we are more confident to follow our own instincts.

By the way OP...very interesting comparison of wipes and nappies...it had never previously entered my mind how a bit double standard it can seem, making fuss over wipes but not nappies.
Yeh - that was point I was getting at.

Obviously I know wipes are fine for most babies' skin, I use them half the time myself - but if they're gonna insist on 'no chemicals' then why not cloth nappies, or at least like I said, some sort of 'eco' unbleached type? (Well, I know why - money, obviously!)

I do get the point of cotton wool etc, and do like my fleece wipes for that reason, but I just don't really get going to all that effort then covering it all up with a standard disposable nappy, I suppose. It seems like double standards by the hospital to be so militant about it.
yeah true, I think a lot of people would be shocked when they knew what chemicals were actually in disposables!

Have to say i havent read everybodys thoughts on this but honestly its ridiculous, Huggies pure wipes are literally just like water and i would love to see somebody clean a babys bum after there 1st black tar like nappy with just cotton wool, all the rubbing and the cotton wool sticking to them would cause more upset! I will DEFINITLY be using the wipes, but i must admit using any other kind with perfume, such as pampers or johnsons, always gave my babies nappy rash x

With 2nd bub I thought I'd use wipes as cotton wool and water had been a bit of a pain the first time round. At 3 months old the child health nurse picked up that my baby daughter's vagina had grown closed. Nurse explained that this was becoming a more common occurrence due to the use of wipes these days. When they are very small, wipes can irritate the inner lips so much that they are constantly trying to heal and the folds of skin can heal together as baby grows. It can re-open later as baby starts to become more active and crawl otherwise surgery is performed when they are older. Fortunately my bub did not need surgery and it self corrected. I know this is probably a rare occurrence, but wanted to mention it for those concerned about wipes with alcohol or chemicals - my baby girl had no rash or irritation to her bottom and no sign that the wipes were doing any harm. The tiny folds can appear red normally so you wouldn't necessarily know they were irritated. There was never infection or swelling, just a gradual irritation over time that caused the tiny bits of skin to fuse and heal together.

This time I'm planning on using a combination of cotton wool, warm water, re-usable cloth wipes and very mild baby wipes, depending on the nappy change and what clean up is required!

I'll be using wipes and if the midwives have an issue with it they can change her/his nappy themselves! I use simple wipes as eye makeup remover and they never even irritate the smallest amount - and I've had the wipe IN my eyeball many times lol!xx
