What are you thoughts on vaccines and autism?

So in case you saw the news in the US they now announced that 1 in I believe 88 children will develop autism. I have done a lot of reading on this and it's all a big contradiction. There is a lot out there that links the vaccines to autism, but of course for every study that says there is a link, there is one that says there isn't. I'm confused. Vaccines have changed a lot since my generation had them as babies and the rise in autism is quite recent. What are your thoughts on this? How do you plan to handle vaccines?

I'm not a doctor but I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the documentation, tracking and reporting of autism.

I think there are a lot of things to attribute to this
Not just vaccines.

I was wondering the same thing!

I doubt though anybody on here is going to have any answers tho.

Here in the US I think to register the child for school it needs certain vaccination though, so you might not have a choice?

One study that linked vaccines to autism was disproved about 18 mos ago because the sample size was too small and I think the researcher might have made up some data (don't quote me on that). Vaccines prob have changed a lot, but I plan to vaccinate my kid. The benefits outweigh the risks in my opinion.

In Canada, you either need vaccinations or an exemption certificate, which can be obtained for any reason, like religion, philosophy, health, etc. it's a human rights issue... I'd imagine it would be similar in the States too?

Yes, I think it depends on your school district though. Some allow easier exemptions than others.

Hi 2012! Yes, you are correct. I read that article and he was not on the up-and-up to say the least. A lot of what I read says that it's the number of vaccines they are getting before age 2yrs, and that they would still get them but later. I'm not sure what to think. The bottom line is I just want to do anything I can to protect my child. I would hate to think it was my fault if something happened. I'm just not sure what to do...

These topics tend to get a little heated. I know the article that was published about vaccines causing autism was retracted and disproved.

I agree with a previous poster that the benefits outweigh the risks. I feel there isn't much choice when it comes to vaccines, your children need to vaccinated for their health.

Well, not if the risk is 1/88! Of course, we don't know the actual risk, but this woman's concern about the rise in vaccinations and the rise in autism potentially being linked is a valid one. I think people are too quick to discount anything that goes against the grain of the medical profession, even if there is reason for concern.
