does my work have the right to tell me im not allowed to work alone???

Hey Ladies

Basically my set shifts are all morning shifts and i work alone on them. i work 3 shifts a week. this is to work around our children as my oh work has been good in giving him a set couple days. I am off on holiday until next tuesday and a colleague has told me that my manager has said that i will no longer be allowed to work alone as new rules have been put in place. I have looked online and all is the same on direct.gov. This will effect me hugely due to my kids etc. I also work in Millies Cookies which surely cannot pose any risk to me. Looking for advice as my shitty manager has still not called me to tell me as she is now on holiday. Think I may have to get into a bit of a fight with them which im dreading x

During my risk assessment my manager said that I should not be left alone to work and I completely agree (I work in a cafe/bar). The reasons being that what happens if I need the toilet (which is happensing increasingly as this pregnancy is progressing!), I can't just run off and leave everything unattended (till, etc) but if I try to hold it then I am leaving myself open to kidney infections and accidents! Also what if I get taken ill, faint or something bad happens. My workplace is looking out for my health and safety as paramount as I'm sure that is what your workplace are doing. In a previous job I was a manager and I had to do several pregnancy risk assessments and the issue of lone working was always a big thing. I hope this helps xx

Thanks hun. I can understand where ur work coming from but the thing with fainting and taking ill etc, u could say that about anyone really, thats what im gonna try and talk to them about. im no more at risk at taking ill when on my own than anyone else is. I have been healthy throughout this pregnancy, no sickness etc. Thank for ur reply hun - think gonna need to get advice. xxxx

I'd recommend getting some advice but I honestly think it's for your safety not to be left alone. Yes you're just as likely to be taken ill whether alone or with someone else but if alone there is noone to phone an ambulance if you collapse and being pregnant means that your health is more important now than ever. And unfortunately being pregnant does make you more prone to illness even if you have had a healthy pregnancy so far. I have never collapsed of fainted throughout this pregnancy but on my last shift I came over all funny and had to sit down to regain my composure. Luckily there was someone with me to hold down the fort, but if I had been alone and tried to power through or had collapsed who knows what could have happened. That then leaves the company I work for up to scrutiny and possible legal action.

They are just covering their backs and trying to keep you safe from harm. Nothing to do with penalising you for pregnancy as that would be discrimination and against the law xx
