Help with bumper and quilt sets for beds - so confused!!

Hi all!

So I've been looking at furniture and bedding sets for ages. Althought I'm finding out the gender of the baby, I'd still like a unisex coloured theme for the nursery (I'm not keen on OTT pink and blue).

I'm really confused with bedding sets...

The ones that come with a quilt and bumper (and there are a lot) say that the bumper should be used until the baby can sit up unaided and that the quilt is only suitable from 12 months.

What's the point in having a co-ordinated set when you can't use the two piece at the same time?!

Coverlets are supposedly fine from birth, so I'd like to find a range with a coverlet and bumper and other matching bits but can't seem to find any anywhere.

Why do so many sets have the bumper with a quilt that's only able to be used when the baby turns one? I really can't get my head around it. I keep seeing so many beautiful sets but after checking the specs they all seem useless/pointless

I kind of get it where they have lots of other things in the sets too...like wall hangings, toys, curtains and all that...but yeah, I don't really get it if it's just the bedding set.

I'm not the matchy type anyway, so I can't really say I've even noticed this before, but now that you point it out it really doesn't make much sense.

Also, I have no idea what a coverlet is

I hope you find something you like...maybe there is a "full" set (with curtains and stuff) somewhere that you like, so you'll always have a few bits matching...even if you can't use all of them at the same time.

This is all so confusing. Everything I have read says you shouldn't put any bumper in a newborns crib because it can suffocate on it. They said you shouldn't put anything in there other than the mattress. Ugh.

It is confusing. We never used our lovely bumper for my daughter because nhs said don't use bumpers for newborns due to risk of suffication if their face ends up against it, but then the bumper itself said not to use after 6m because of risks associated with the strings attached to it!

Can't help thinking some of the bed sets are a bit of a con

Bumpers are pretty but other than that don't really serve much purpose. I'm just getting some fitted sheets and a quilt that matches the rest of the room theme I'm doing. I'll have receiving/swaddling blankets, etc of course as well and MIL is making another quilt. So I'm not planning on buying a bedding set. I didn't get one for my daughter either, just didn't see the purpose.

i put the comforter on the wall for decoration since i couldn't find anything to put above her crib, and also she is 6 months old now and sitting on her own and she still has the bumper in her crib i have never taken them off before they were able to stand up in the crib because of how much they move around and you dont want them hitting the soft spot just right on one of the bars.

I've had bumpers on all 3 of my kids cribs with no issues and the quilt/comforter that came with the sets came in handy when I put them down for tummy time, it can also be used to decorate the nursery. My 6yo still uses her comforter to this day! What I don't get is how they can charge so much for them!

I am also confused by the whole bedding set thing. Some places like IKEA or Pottery Barn sell everything individually or in sets. The set I want is from Pottery Barn and doesn't include a bumper. I didn't want a bumper because many people say it's dangerous. Also a good idea is to get a baby crib that converts to a toddler bed. That way you can use comforters and pillows with that and keep the same theme through toddler years.

I know what you mean about this. I couldn't believe the price for the sets when you can't even use the quilt!!!

However, I purchased the time to play bedding bale set from IzzywotNot. This set came with a fitted sheet (spotty), a flat sheet (with the design on it), a bumper (matching), a celular blanket (white and very soft), and a coverlet (which I had no idea what it was until it arrived). I got all this for £70 from the amazon site.

They also have the quilt and pillow set to match but I don't need this yet so not purchased it. I have also purchased one of the 'gro bag' things to match.

I have seen the mixed reviews re bumpers but I'm still going to use mine.

I hope you find something! Izzywotnot have pink and blue designs also. They are all on their website. But I find Amazon cheaper.

N xx
