Do babies really need SO much stuff???

I’m getting stressed out here.. How am I going to afford all of this baby stuff??? And then is it even going to fit in my house??? Haven’t people survived for centuries without all this STUFF???

I guess it is to make mommy’s life easier but I’m getting so stressed!

I was shocked too although I do think alot of it is for ease rather than essential. I cant believe how big my list is and how much such a tiny little thing needs. Im trying to keep it to a minimum but even then it seems like loads!! x

Honestly, no, you don't need that much stuff. If you're worried about space, skip getting a changing table. I always use a sheet on the floor or couch. Also, a crib can wait. A pack and play works and is usually cheaper and takes up less space. Most of them come with a bassinet basket that works for the first couple of months so you don't have to bend down as far.

As far as baby clothes go, two or three actual outfits is all you need for the first few months. I always just bought the packs of sleepers and onesies. Oh, and newborns don't really need toys, not until they actually start staying awake longer than the time it takes to feed them.

Basically, all a baby really needs is a car seat, diapers, a place to sleep, blankets for swaddling, something to wear, and bottles if you're going to use them.

You definately don't need all the stuff some people buy! I was one of those people with my first I had everything!!

This baby is getting-
Moses basket
Crib (not a cot bed as they are bigger and I don't have space!)
Bouncer chair
Baby box to keep handy and stocked with nappies, cream, wipes, bibs etc the rest I will store in the cupboard!
Pram
Bottles/steriliser.

That literally is all I am buying!
We live in a flat so not buying baby bath, I will just buy a little bather to put in big bath.

Xx

i think you can register for just the "necessities"... i know there are a lot of stuff on registries that people don't end up using anyway... for example, a wipes warmer, etc.

I basically live in a one bedroom apartment and am like you. I was so worried about things I need for this baby, considering we are both currently unemployed due to down sizing. I am buying:
a crib,
maybe $50 worth of clothing,
bottles/bottle sterilizer,
a stroller,
a baby sack you know w.e. they are called to carry baby in when I dont want to drag around a whole stroller,
a white noise machine (because I need a new one and like to sleep with it too)
a pump for me so the man can get up and feed baby in the middle of the night too

and of course diapers and wipes, but aside from that I am really not going to be buying much else. I haven't decided yet whether or not I want to buy a faucet attachment with a sprayer for baby sink baths.

My cousin just had a baby hes now 6 months but I was there in December and they had SO much stuff it was unbelievable who needs all that stuff? The kid barely even knew what it was. It really is ridiculous to me to buy all that stuff. I didnt have all that stuff, why would my baby need all of it?

I guess I have to get a car seat apparently or they wont let me take the baby home from the hospital, but I'll probably buy used or borrow one since I dont drive

You honestly don't need that much, don't get sucked into thinking that you need everything. You obviously need somewhere for baby to sleep and some sort of pram/buggy that can lie flat and a car seat to bring them home from hospital. Also some type of chest of drawers or wardrobe to put their clothes in. You will probably also appreciate some sort of swing or bouncy chair to put them in during the day. Other than that you don't really actually need much. You don't need a changing table in my opinion, just a changing mat will do fine. They don't really need many toys for the first few months. You also don't actually need things like special nappy bins and bottle warmers or most other baby "gadgets". If space and money are limited, then I would be inclined not to buy very much and wait and see if you really need it when baby is here.

All they need is:

Clothing
Nappies
Somewhere to sleep
Something to eat (breast or bottle)
A blanket
A carseat
A stroller or baby carrier

Honestly, all the rest is just crap you are told you need.
