I wanted to bf my first too, she latched on lovely for 20 minutes, but when she had done there was no evidence of her having gotten anything, when i tried to express I had no milk So i have never tried again since. Could have with DS, had tonnes of the stuff but decided not to bother.

do i buy the newborn ones first of all or just use the larger ones but put the same amount of formula?

I did buy a couple of small ones last time but this time I havent bothered, got 1 with the sterilizer I bought, unless they are on an unmissable offer I wont be bothering, will just use the 1 I have for cooled boiled water

which brand bottle do you recommend?

I tried Avent initially with DD 11 years ago, and they pissed me off no end leaking, tried them again with DS and I ended up emailing a complaint to Avent and they sent me out 6 brand new ones that I sold, I went onto Tommee Tippee. DS loved them and was very happy so I shall be using those again this time, in fact I have already bought them! They aren't cheap but are cheaper than some of the others on the market.

microwave/electric sterilizer?

I used a water sterilizer with DD and bought a Tommee Tippee microwave/water with DS, started on water then moved to microwave, bought a Tommee Tippee microwave steam sterilizer this time

which brand of teats?

Tommee Tippee that come with the bottles

which flow of teats?

Will start out with the stage 1 and move up as baby needs them

which formula would you recommend?

I used SMA with DS and Cow and Gate with DS, simply because I had read allsorts of stories about SMA and decided it wasn't for my son. However, it is possible that whatever you choose, baby might not like it, unfortunately milk and bottles are one thing that are trial and error, your baby could possibly not like the bottle/milk you choose but don't fret, you will soon know if something isn't agreeing with your baby

i do apologise about all of the questions, i just worry about these kind of things hehe, i would really appreciate this
Don't apologise, there's simply no need. Every first time mummy-to-be worries about things like this, there isn't any form of parenting manual that explains the benefits and things of all the different items required.

Its like this, 11 years ago when I had DD, i used to make up 6 bottles before I went to bed and put them in the fridge for the next days feeds, when I had DS just under 2 years ago I was told that was a big fat NO NO, milk must not be left for longer than 2 hours.... I mean WTF!!! The way they make the formula wont have changed a fat lot, its just the rules they decide on. To be fair, I did make up a bottle at night for DS and I did put it in the fridge, then when he woke up either through the night or in the morning there was one ready to heat in the microwave and he didn't have to sit howling while it sat in a jug of cold water cooling. Nothing bad happened to him... Also, I must add at this point, if you do warm milk in the microwave be careful as you can get "heat spots" and they can burn baby's mouth. I usually do about 20 seconds, depending on the wattage of your microwave, (mines 800w) then give it a good shake, test milk on back of your hand and hang ona minute as microwaved things keep cooking for 1 minute after being taken out.

Sorry it's a long reply, but hope I have helped somewhat xxx

This is very interesting. I was going to buy Philips Avent stuff but rethinking that now.
Out of interest, what do people find as the best way to heat up bottles?

I was looking at bottle heaters on Amazon but the reviews are all a bit so so.

I know you can microwave but what other ways are there?

Also the boiled water thing. do you literally boil some water, let it cool then give to baby? Do you do this is batches? Is it boiled in the kettle (limescale!) or in a pan?

I too have many questions.

I used Avent with my daughter and it worked great i loved it. My son used medela..only because it worked along with my breast pump. I have heard nothing but good things about Tommy Tippie brand. Plan to only use boobs this time though

The Dr Browns bottles are ace and really do help with colic. However, they have a tendancy to leak when you are using them so you need to be careful when you make them up. It's to do with the valve and the hot water.

Re: sterilisers, stay away from the electric Mothercare Pod (I think its called). It leaks water all over the worktop, its a design fault.

If you go for a microwave steriliser, make sure you remember to add water to it and not leave a bottle brush in there. My husband nearly killed us all when he melted the sterilister and all of our Medela pump accessories at 3am one morning. All down to lack of sleep. We had to open all the windows for the rest of the night in the middle of winter to air the house while my 2 week old son screamed the house down because he was starving and my poor cracked and bleeding nipples were not up to the job. That was a seriously dark night!

The thing is you could go though loads or bottles and formula before you find the one your little one will take too

Rhys was very easy going, had sma from the beginning and would take to any teat but my personal fav are Mam

But some babies are extremely picky so don't shell out loads of money till baby is here

i would like to say a massive thank you to all of your ladies that have replied! you have really helped me a lot

it looks to me that the Avent bottles aren't too great as many of you said they leaked. i am going to try Tommee Tippee ones including the Tommee Tippee electric sterilizer too.

you've all been such a great help, thank you

I have bought Avent, I got a set which had two newborn, two bigger bottles, newborn teats, 1+ month teat, then bought another packet of normal size. I also got one free with my Avent steraliser.

My nephew used Tommee Tipee and had no issues with leaking or anything but I prefer Avent, always have done for some reason.

Think I will be using SMA gold Formula.

With Dr Brown bottles, do they leak if you screw the tops on incorrectly or are they just prone to leaking full stop?

I think our Avent bottles leaked before because the top of the bottle and the teat had to be 110% bone dry when doing them up rather than they just didn't fit iygwim?

Really like the design and sound of the Dr Browns but I know if they leak all the time it'll just end up frustrating me haha!
