Dental Treatment During Pregnancy

Hi

I had a visit to the dentist today as I have mild toothache (its there but not flooring me I can cope at the mo) and he said my wisdom tooth needs to be pulled?! EEEKKK!! Anyway, after asking (they did not offer) he said he may be able to fill it as the decay is very small but it is in an awkward place.

I was very chuffed not to have vomitted on him as MS is still here but am thinking I will get a second opinion from a private dentist as I have had bad experiences with this NHS practice before. Anyway my question is are you able to have a local anasetic whilst pregnant? He said it was ok and he will use one without adraleine (sp?) but i trust him as far as I can throw him!

I am seeing my m/w next week so will ask her but just wondered if anyone knew/had any experience in this area in the meantime?

Thanks ladies

hi i too need my wisdom teeth out but one broke so i got a filling in it for now as i need to have them removed at the hospital and there is a waiting list. It safe to have the numbing injection but they wont put a permenant filling in it, they will use a semi perm or a temp filling as something in the permy one isnt safe when pregnant! It should hold it fine til you get the tooth removed as ive had mine for a while now with no probs xx

I was told I couldn't get anesthetic, which was then followed by me going on a rant about how they have a cheek to offer you free dental treatment when you can't even get anything done with anesthetic blah blah blah.
I have quite bad toothache at the moment, but I am point blank refusing to get anything done if they won't numb me. So I'm opting for lots of paracetamol and a patient wait until baby is here so I can get it done how I want it.

Everything done in dentistry is safe the precautions and reluctance to do treatment is because they can't assume how bad an infection is or how deep a filling is without an X-ray saying that digital dental X-rays have the same amount of radiation as walking to the shop in the sun so in fact isn't a risk of such, its also very uncomfortable for a pregnant woman to be reclined so far back so basically they refrain to avoid distress and also to avoid doing anything without a proper diagnosis. All filling materials are safe including mercury silver amalgams unless you are allergic to it if it wasn't safe it wouldn't be good enough for anyone not just pregnant women.

If you're in pain it's best to get it treated properly to avoid an infection because infections can go into your blood stream if your dentist can remove the decay and temporise it that should be ok until baby is here however if he thinks he can make it a more permanent solution don't be afraid to get it done I had a lady in on Friday only 2 weeks from EDD and she was in pain so we had no choice but to do her filling to avoide her being more distressed x

I was only talking to someone at work the other day about how you get free prescriptions but can't take anything

it is ridiculous really. i suppose it means they aren't really losing that much money if we can't use the free service!!

That's ridiculous tbh he's probably not doing the treatment because if he waits 3 months from your checkup or first visit he gets more UDA's (treatment points) because your treatment basically starts over as a new treatment plan and its more money for him ugh... considering your in pain it's obviously an infection he can't expect you to have treatment done without anesthetic! See someone else it's negligent letting you have an infection without offering a more appropriate solution this won't just leave you in pain the infection will get worse and you can't exactly be fed constant courses of antibiotics it also affects your nutrition because you won't eat properly with a toothache! IMHO time to find someone with your best interest at heart xx

I have a badly decayed tooth that needs pulling but the dentist has refused to do it even though I have been several times with it due to having an abscess and just awful pain at others. They're maing me wait until I've had the baby. I just hope that it doesnt turn serious in the next 15 weeks x

I can't afford private dental care, and I'm a registered NHS patient with this practice, so I don't really have the ability to pick and choose what dentist I get. I'm not sure what else I can do.
