Not the metal detecting one, I think that's fine- in America they have scanners that take like X-ray pictures of you and can spot if you're hiding anything under your clothes.

Airport scanners are harmless!!!

They DO NOT have xray ones in most airports... Those are only for luggage!

Flights to America may have the new ones but you have the right to request a pat down

PS Im an ex trolley dolly and the girls I worked with we're going through the scanners right through to the last weeks of their pregnancies.

It looks like if you fly from Manchester, you do NOT have the right to request a pat down. Having said that, they reckon the scanner is 1/1000 of the strength of a medical X-ray, and the X-rays will not pass through your skin so no harm to baby.

But I am sure I flew from Manchester not long after they had the scanners installed, and I don't recall going through one?

Body-scanners & Pregnancy

Body-scanners are now being used at Manchester Airport to allow security checking of a person without the need for a physical ‘pat down’ by a security officer.

Many official, independent international bodies including the Health
Protection Agency (HPA) in the UK have assessed the risks from the scanners. They are approved for use for all passengers including expectant mothers.

The emissions received from the scanner are a very small fraction of that received every day from natural sources.

These emissions are enough to pass through clothing but not high enough to pass through the body and therefore pose no risk to the mother or baby. The reflected X-rays are then collected and transformed electronically into an image of the body shape.

Damn things change so quick in this big brother nation we live in!

Last time I flew was the beginning of the month, I opted out of the body scanner and got a pat down it was non invasive wasn't too bad... you have the option of going to a private room to be patted down if being patted down in public embarasses you.

I just came back from a trip all over Europe.
The only place I saw the scanners was in Boston- Logan airport, and I just said, I'm pregnant. And just walked through the metal detector. Nothing else.

In all the other airports where I went through security (London Heathrow, Treviso Italy (near Venice), Timisoara Romania, and Frankfurt Germany), I never had a problem, as none of them had body scanners where I was entering security.

Only metal detectors.

You'll be fine. I was nervous about this too, as when I left I was only 8 weeks along.
Don't worry and I didn't do any pat downs.

I think she was referring to the new ones, which use X-Rays.

DH and I flew from Washington, DC to Paris for our babymoon and I did not feel comfortable going through it. I was patted down by a female who did a VERY thorough job, but I even had the options of getting it done in a private room if it made me feel more comfortable. I didn't care - I've had my legs spread enough at the OB so what's a little feel-up by some airport security worker?!

Yip the usual metal detecting ones that we all pass through are fine (in fact went though one last week- the x ray signs refer to the luggage scanners). More and more airports in the UK are using body scanners but usually for only selected people- I had to go in one at christmas time as the christmas pudding I was carrying in my hand luggage raised suspicion I would ask not to be scanned now I'm pregnant if I were requested to now.

Yeah in the uk... Most airports... Excluding Manchester now it seems... Only have them for flights to high risk countries such as america...

Most short haul flights to Europe still use the old system
