question about surestart maternity grant and heath in pregnancy grant

hi i thought you ladies might have more experience with this than everyone in 2nd trimester.

when you claim the surestart maternity grant, is it just £500 put into your bank account? or do they give you vouchers to make sure you spend it certain shops, mothercare vouchers etc?

if they just put £500 in your account, how can they make sure you are actually not buying yourself things instead of the baby??

also what is the health in pregnancy grant meant to be for? vitamins etc? seems a lot of money for them

thanks

Im not sure about the Surestart Maternity Grant, but the HIP grant is meant to be for looking after yourself in pregnancy, This is paid straight into your bank. You can spend it on anything really, we bought things for the nursery with it. But use it as you wish.

HiPG is for anything from extra fruit and veg in the last weeks or baby equipment. It's basically just a way to encourage folk to attend antenatal care.

Surestart is paid into your bank account. If you look on the small print it does says you should keep receipts as they may ask to see them. Or it did when I got it in my last pregnancies. Never heard of anyone asking to see the receipts though.

With DS2 we used it to buy bunk beds for the bedroom as we knew we would need them in a year or so and a cheap travel system.

both lots get paid straight into your bank. i've never none them do checks on sure start and i used to work in the dept at DWP that did the grants. the surestart is going on my credit card - which has been used to buy baby stuff throughout the year so in a round about sort of way it will be used for baby!

Well my mw said you can spend it on whatever you wish. . .baby stuff, maternity wear, even paint etc for decorating! I spent all my savings etc on baby stuff and bf has spent a lot too. We have a few more things to get but i've just had my £190 which i'd like to save for when lo is here, and same with the £500! Well, actually, a lot will go on formula i expect. Will be nice to have it there if i've forgotten anything for baby. . .don't think i have mind you!!
