Feeling down about my last appointment

Hi ladies,
I just came for a bit of a vent I guess. I'm feeling a bit down after my appointment yesterday. My regular obgyn was not in so I had a nurse who was filling in for him, and she made me feel really bad.

I have gained 4 pounds since my last appointment 2 weeks ago. She brought it up, but instead of kindly mentioning it, she said "A bit of a weight gain from last time. Do you eat a lot of ice-cream?" I replied no, and she said "oh...really? 4 pounds in 2 weeks is not from a healthy diet. Lay off any secret cake!"

She didn't believe that I'm eating healthy, and the way she worded it really stung. Even if I was eating cake and ice cream (which I really am not - maybe a cookie or two per week), so what? Can't we occasionally indulge without being belittled?

I am 32+5, and I have gained 21 pounds so far this pregnancy (with a prepregnancy weight of 135 lb at 5ft8in), so I feel like I'm on track to gain the recommended weight.

I'm trying not to let it bother me, but it truly is.

She also told me I better think of a name soon for the baby or else we won't get to try it out and could regret what we call her. With DS1+DS2 we didn't name them until the hospital and don't regret our choices.

Thanks for listening

How rude!!! I know I have gained too much at times and I even bring it up to my dr and she is very kind and says it's steady, and sometimes I'll gain more and sometimes less and that it's normal. 4 lbs in 2 weeks could be the difference between having breakfast or not that day or extra water weight or even a bowel movement! I think that nurse has no tact.

Wow, how rude!

The name thing, too. I'm baffled. My mother did pick names ahead of time, and when she held my sister for the first time, she didn't go with that name. She went in thinking she was about to meet Lauren. She held her and said nope, this is a Jessica.

Like its any of her business, fair enough if you were overweight!!!! Im 32 weeks and feel like baby is having a spurt my appetite has increased the past week or so! And yes if I want ice cream il have it! 21 pounds to gain is nothing!

I know how you feel, at my last appointment at 28 weeks I saw a different midwife, she was rubbish felt like she didn't know or bother about my concerns and I had to ask the phlebotomist for advice! Iv spent the last 4 weeks worrying trying to get my normal midwife!

WOW! How Rude! I would complain. There is no reason to say that to you. If she was concerned, she could have made a note of it in your records and your primary OB doctor could choose to speak to you about it if he/she wishes. That's ridiculous. As far as naming your baby, she should keep her opinions to herself. It's none of her business.

This has me ALL fired up! Some people have no respect for others.

Hell, I've gained 48 at 36 weeks. I started swelling and ballooned up 3 lbs in a week. I'm over the weight gain, wish it wasn't happening but what can you do? I can't exercise because of intense SPD...I don't gorge myself but screw dieting at the end of pregnancy. I'll kill myself over my weight once I'm not carrying around another human in my uterus.

I have gained 33 so far... Doctors haven't mentioned anything. Your weight gain seems even less than normal, that nurse sounds crazy

Very rude! I'd have been putting in a complaint about that kind of talk... and to go on about the baby names too, how ridiculous. A lot of people don't name baby until after they're born anyway. X

Holy f* that was way out of line! I would have bitched her out right then and there and demanded to see someone else. First, weight fluctuates so much and is affected by so many variables. My gyn said from 24 weeks on she wanted me gaining 1-1.5lbs a week so 4 lbs in two weeks isn't totally out there. I'm so sorry she made you feel that way commenting on making your kid is also way out of line. I'd file a complaint.
