Head engaging at 28 weeks

Hi third tri!!
I had my 28 week scan yesterday and the sonographer really struggled to see LO properly as he was so low down. She said his head is way down between my pelvis and he's started to engage already.
I had my first son at 32 weeks and now I'm really worried this one will come early too. When I mentioned my concerns to the consultant and asked if it was anything to worry about she basically just said I've had one prem baby so be prepared for another and if he arrives on time it's a bonus! She said sometimes they move back up but it's unlikely that he will.
I can't stop thinking about it and it's really stressing me out. She was useless, really.

Has anyone else had head down partially engaged baby at 28 weeks or later and it's moved back up? Obviously I don't want him turning breech or anything but it would be nice to think he's just floating around up high for a little longer!

Oh, yes. All of my subsequent babies engaged early on, but since your pelvis has already changed, they can pop themselves back out at any point. Your baby will probably engage and dis-engage for a few more months. I wanna add that this baby (my fifth pregnancy) was engaged at an ultrasound I had at 24 weeks along. She turned breech after that and has turned around since. My babies are being born later and later.

Thanks! That's reassuring to hear. The thought of another preemie terrifies me.

This baby has even engaged since 31 weeks at nearly every check - on Thursday I was in triage and that's the only time she has been "free". I had to finish work earlier than intended (34 weeks) because of being on my feet for 12 hours but she's stayed put some far! The worst bit is how uncomfortable and painful it is as I already have SPD but so far she's behaved and cooked.

I understand your worry as Rio was prem but try not to too much - baby might just like being awkward. My midwife told me just to rest when I could

Yes, my 2nd and 3rd both popped in and out through 3rd tri, both were some way engaged (I can't remember how much but not far in, I think 1 or 2 5ths, or 4/5 5ths, whichever way round is a smaller amount of engagement. Both went past their due dates. I don't have a history of delivering early so I don't know how useful my experience but certainly in my case engaging early on wasn't an issue.

As far as I'm aware, second babies can engage and disengage far more readily than first babies.

My girl started to engage early, I can't remember when exactly, but she was engaging early. I was induced at term and she wasn't particularly low when I was induced!

My baby was really low about 3 weeks ago and now he's really high according to ob. She said my cervix is ready and if he would drop I would dilate more. I delivered my 3 other children before 37 weeks and now I'm almost 38 weeks with this one and I'm starting to think he's going to stay in there forever

My first baby was engaged from 25 weeks and they could never measure his head on scan due to this no matter how hard they tried. He was born at 39+6. Now 31 weeks with second and he pops in and out of being engaged as our muscles aren't as strong after having one baby already x

My 2nd baby was engaged at 27 or 28 weeks. I remember it because that's when the pelvic pain started. I pretty much knew exactly when his head was engaged and when it wasn't. In my case it meant absolutely nothing as he engaged and disengaged a lot throughout 3rd trimester and he was full-term (40+5).

Thanks everyone that's great to hear. My pelvic pain has got so much worse in the last week or two also, perhaps that's why. I have a 4D scan booked for Friday so I hope they'll still be able to get a good view of his little face being all down there!
