Are Uti's painful?!

Hi there I'm new to 3rd tri! 28 weeks .. I knew a week ago I probably had a uti as the midwife dipped a test strip in my urine and it showed up signs of infection .. I've had to wait a week for results to come back and get a prescription .. my stomachs been slowly get more uncomfortable especially when I need to pee!

Right now my stomach is cramping pretty painful and it hurts to move etc .. never had a uti before so I don't know how they feel! Is it normal for them to be painful?

It is common for UTIs to be painful - however, you may want to give your midwife a ring, anyway. Just to make sure what you're experiencing is the UTI and not some co-occurring situation. Sorry you're uncomfortable - hope you're feeling better soon!

(if it is a UTI, rest assured, they clear up fairly quickly as soon as you start meds!)

I would call.

Typically uti symptoms ate frequency, urgency, and pain when going. Though i think I've herd that in pregnancy you may not have the typical symptoms (lime with the urine test being the first indication of infection).

I would still call to be safe as if it is a uti and had been sitting for a week, there's a possibility of the infection traveling up to your kidneys causing a kidney infection.

It could be something completely different and unrelated it even nothing at all, but I'd definitely ring and see what they say to be on the safe side.

It depends. I tend to be rather prone to them. Sometimes it hurts - feels like you are peeing razor blades, other times there is discomfort and I can't completely empty my bladder. You can flush it though with cranberry juice and then continue to take cranberry every day to avoid it in the future. I hate cranberry juice with a passion so I tend to go to the doctor for antibiotics. However, in saying that it is important that they find out what strain of infection it is as some certain strains are immune to different antibiotics.

**NB** Cranberry only seems to be effective if you jump on it pretty fast!! Your doctor and antibiotics will be your best option to make sure it's sorted properly.

Yes - DEFINITELY mention it if you're still feeling pain/discomfort tomorrow. My experience with UTIs is that the symptoms noticeably decrease within 12 hours of the first dose of antibiotics, so it's good that you have a day between starting meds and your appointment.

Hope it clears up quickly!

Thanks ladies been for my check up today and mention everything she said any discomfort is probably from the uti .. I had my appointment at the hospital instead of local MW so saw a few different MW .. after looking at my book and it says leucocyte+ and prot+ .. I guess that could be to do with the uti but I had no protein on my last check up just leucocyte .. my BP last time was 120/78 this time 135/74 .. they didn't mention anything about any of it so I'm assuming it's all fine?! They leave you in the dark a bit really!
