Stretch and Sweep?

I'm 39 weeks today and my midwife offered me a stretch and sweep on Tuesday if I want one. She said it's entirely up to me.

I've been having prodromal labour symptoms for the past 36 hours on and off. I've had some protein and high BP on and off over the third trimester but they won't diagnosed me with preeclampsia or induce me.

I'm feeling tired and ready for him to come but also a little sad it could all be over. But I'm also excited to meet him and know he's fully cooked and my medical history probably makes him safer on the outside.

Anyone had one? What was it like? Did it put you into labour?

Thanks.

I had one with my first LO and went into labour the same day! It only took her a few minutes .. I would recommend it .. Good luck!

I had 2 with my son and I'm afraid it didn't do anything for me, I was later induced. It can't hurt to give it a try though, I've heard of lots of successful sweeps

Thanks Sarah. I'm just feeling like it's still early days, I'll be 39 and a half weeks then. I know there's not much harm and if it doesn't work it's no biggie either. I've read that it can cause prodromal labour which I've been dealing with anyway so I don't want to make that worse! I'm also curious about whether I've dialated at all and they don't check that here unless you get a stretch and sweep or are in active labour.

Sweeps worked twice for me at 41 weeks. I've got another booked in for the 5th if I get that far! It's uncomfortable but hey, what about pregnancy isn't?

Edited to add: DD arrived the morning after my sweep at 5.37am, DS arrived the evening after my sweep!

sweeps done with my first didn't work, but the dumb OB/GYN did one just before 37 weeks and then again just before 38- I just think it was too early. With my second it worked!

Word of caution, I was in labor for what felt like forever with my second. It took a good 10+ hours for prodromal labor to turn into active labor, and it was the middle of the night so I was exhausted. Still, if you're over it the procedure can't hurt!

Thanks.

Super that sounds awesome!

Stellae, thanks. I've heard it can just cause long prodromal labour so that's why I'm not sure.

I'm not really in any hurry. My bump is pretty small and I'm able to do everything and feel ok. My only reasons for doing it is firstly, I can't wait to meet him haha. Secondly, my midwife has the weekend after my due date off. I really don't want someone else to deliver him. I just want her to be there. And thirdly, I'm having slightly high BP, some protein and headaches. I'm being monitored closely for preeclampsia. Also with having Lupus there are other potential complications. So now that he's fully grown I feel he might be better on the outside.

Had 2, neither worked. Moderately uncomfortable...felt pretty much like all the other "checks" I had done leading up to baby's birth.

Good luck!

I had 2 this time around and neither put me into labour however between sweep 1 and 2 I dilated another cm and was more effaced and lost a heap of plug/mucus so maybe it helped me along. I didn't find it uncomfortable at all and was actually surprised when she said it was done. Sonid say it's worth a try! Good luck!xx
