Any useful items for C-section?

Hey ladies! My due date has been cut short! After a failed ECV this stubborn baby will not move .. his bum is wedged in my pelvis .. I am booked in for a c-section a week today! I don't really mind how it's worked out I'm just super excited for our baby to be here ...

I was just wondering if anyone who has had one before can suggest anything I may need to take that will be useful or just any useful info!

I've re packed my whole bag because now we will be in longer than planned! How much do you bleed after too is it the same as a vaginal birth or better/worse?

😀

I’m taking loose clothing for afterwards because of the scar and a dressing gown if I have to walk to the theatre to cover my back. I’m wearing flips flops so I don’t have to bend and tie my shoe laces. Big granny pants!

Peppermint tea midwife suggested for trapped wind. Apparently it’s quite common and can be painful. There’s nothing I think I’m taking that’s much different to a Vbac. I’m taking lots of pads as you do bleed, I assume so. it’s so exciting!! x

I stayed 3 days and that was with being released a day early. Bring comfy clothes, like dresses so nothing sits on your scar. Otherwise you should be fine. Just make sure you get up and try to walk the next day, the longer you put off walking the harder it will be. I had an easy recovery as far as the scar/ getting back to daily activity went and its mostly because I got up, moved and walked.

Thanks ladies! Not long for you is it what will be?

I've packed my maternity leggings which go up to my bra so they won't sit on the scar and big pants! I've tried to pack loose clothes so hopefully I will be okay!

My aim is to get up and walking asap ...

It is so exciting I can't wait x

Double the amount of pads that you think! I bled heavily, it's worse I think than a normal birth as with birthing the baby a lot of the blood comes out then whereas with a section it's not pushed out. Massive pants, and trousers at least a size or 2 bigger as you won't want anything touching your scar. Extra clothes for staying in an extra few days. It's harder to move round yourself so I bled through a few items where I was laid down in bed instead of being up and about! I had bad gas pains after and mint tea def helped. (And hot water bottles when I got home)Also apricots and prunes as section can really constipate you and it makes gas worse!
And yes def get up as soon as you can, it will feel like your inside are falling out but it does get easier quickly. And stay on top ofthe pain relief, don't wait till it hurts to take pain relievers.

Definitely agree with getting up and moving, gently of course, as soon as you can. I had my C-section at about 8pm and they had me get up before breakfast the next morning. And soft loose clothes are essential. Slip on shoes or slippers are also great.

I actually didn't bleed all that heavily after my C-section, just like a light period for week or two, and I had quite a few maternity pads left over. So I think it varies a lot, but better to be prepared and make sure you have plenty of pads.

Just had a section 5 weeks ago. I bought 2 loose nightgowns that I could easily pull straps down for breastfeeding. Not sure where you are geographically but hospitals in the states will provide just about everything else you'll need. Large absorbent pads, mesh panties, etc. I suggest bringing your own toiletries.

A pp had mentioned peppermint tea for trapped wind... my lactation consultant told me to stay away from too much peppermint as it's one of the few foods to mess with breast milk supply. As a physiotherapist (which i am licensed in the states), one of the best ways to get rid of trapped wind is movement and walking. Get the nurses to help if needed, but the sooner you're up and moving the better. It'll come out easier while you're walking. Trust me when I say you won't want to bear down or try to push out those farts. But yes, trapped wind can be quite uncomfortable.

I didn't bleed heavily after my section. The first day yes, but after that it was like my regular period flow that gradually tapered over 3 weeks.

Also, when you get up and move around, remember to stand up tall! Don't hunch over when you walk. Trust me, your incision will thank you in the long run.

Thanks ladies that's very helpful .. I'm taking 2 packets of maternity pads and might get just a normal pack of absorbent sanitary towels ... I've tried to also pack tops I can pull up or down easy for feeding x

Our hospital provided a very concentrated mint drink but yes Id suggest to be cautious of peppermint tea just because it can really impact your milk supply
