"Dropped" = engaged?

Just saw the midwife and she said baby had dropped. Didn't occur to me till I was outside to ask if this means the same as engaged I know second babies can pop in and out but if it does mean engaged I'm still pretty hyped! Or is dropping something else?

Umm sort of! It means the baby's head has dropped into your pelvis but not necessarily fully engaged. If you look on your notes it might say something like 1/5 to 5/5, that's how engaged you are. But second babies can pop in and out quite often so they don't put much emphasis on it, I dropped about 2 weeks ago and his head has been engaged and then in and out since! I can feel when he's engaged as it feels like I have a bowling ball in between my legs! He was proper engaged yesterday and the day before as I was waddling and was sore to walk, today he seems to have popped out again! 🙄 So I wouldn't put much hope in it, it doesn't really mean much in terms of labour etc and plenty don't engage till labour itself xx

Ah thank you! Last night I had the bowling ball feeling full on, went for a short walk and felt like I could barely make it it was so uncomfortable! Don't think my son ever engaged until labour because I don't remember that feeling and also they told me he was floating 3 days before I suddenly went into labour. So either way I guess it doesn't mean much like you say! I'm gonna have a look at my notes to see if she jotted something down though, thanks

Dropped usually means that you're getting close! It means that baby is in the correct position for birth and the head is in your pelvis. Usually you'll start feeling some relief off your lungs and stomach when this happens. Engagement typically doesn't happen until right before birth, though not always.

Yay! Thanks.

My son was born back to back which as well as being painful also made labour reeeally long, so I should've asked the midwife if she could tell if baby was OA, but I am terrible at remembering what I want to ask! She says "any questions?" And I go "ummm, don't think so" then get out on the street and my mind fills with questions haha. Good thing I have you ladies at bnb
