Baby's head engagement

Hello ladies
I came back from my doctor's appointment and finally some good news ! I'm 1 cm and the cervix is thinning.I wasn't told at what station the baby is but he said she wasn't engaged yet.

I was wondering how come he can tell she's low , head down if she's not engaged?
I thought engage means the head is in the pelvic bone?? I assume if it wasn't there that he won't be able to touch it,no?

I'm 37 weeks btw.
Oh yes, is ur baby's head engaged and if so when it happened?
I thought that the first baby engages much earlier but i guess i was wrong?

My baby is 3/5 engaged apparently they split the babies head into 5 and so if they can feel 3 bits of it that means 2 /5ths is in the pelvis i guess yours means they can still feel all the head . Its not unheard off to engage in labour . Good signs though with being 1cm and cervix thinning .xx

Thanks for the replays. What u mean, they can feel all the head?As far as i know when they can feel the head while duing the pelvic exam it means that the baby's head is down,no?

Well baby can be head down but not engaged at all. Baby was 3/5th's engaged at my 34 week appointment...

and is now apparently fully engaged- 0 station, at my 36 week appointment as the midwife could feel absolutely no head (0/5th's palpable) which means the whole thing is down into the pelvis. But this is apparently very unusal...so much so, im being sent for a presentation scan on tuesday!

But be careful do distinguish between if they write in your notes '5ths palpable' as this is different to '5ths engaged'.

If the person examining you says baby is 2/5ths palpable that means that they can palpate (feel) 2/5th's of babys head....therefore 3/5ths must be down and engaged into the pelvis..

Yes...when they feel/press the abdomen with the flats of their fingers to determine the baby's position.

It's what i thought. My doctor never checked like this.He said she's head down and coming low (but not engaged no idea if he meant not fully engaged) when he checked the cervix. So ,in a way, this is a good thing-i mean if he's able to touch baby's head like that it's coz she's already in the pelvic bone?

Thanks for the explanation hon
