iron pills and swollen ankles?

at my last prenatal appointment my labs came back showing that i was slightly anemic with low iron counts. my doctor prescribed iron pills to take in conjunction with my prenatal pill. i picked up the prescription last wednesday evening and began taking them on thursday. before this i had had some days with moderate swelling in my feet, but it always happened when it was a long day of being on my feet and not drinking enough water, so i expected the swelling. the days i have been taking the iron pills, however, my ankles have swollen worse than ever even while i have stayed off of my feet for the most part and have drank upwards of 70 oz of water per day. i havent been eating more salt than usual either. so, im wondering, has anyone had this? does anyone know if iron pills can cause increased swelling? and, if so, is it something to be concerned about?

Hi I have had exactly the same problem they contacted me 4 days after my bloods were taken. Now my feet are swelling really badly to the point I can't get any shoes even flip flops on . If they swell like this tomorrow will ring midwife but I need to get my iron level up or no homebirth .

i took my labs the day before my appointment, and the doctor had the results when i showed up the next afternoon. but it may work differently here as im in the US, and i also go to a military hospital. im not sure how the system works over there, but i would probably start calling if i hadnt heard anything within a week. at the worst theyll just tell you that they arent ready yet. or maybe you havent heard anything because it all came back perfect! i hope thats the case!

I started taking my iron pills last thursday and since then it seems like my ankles haven't gone down at all, even in the morning! I blamed it on the weather at first, but today's been miserable and much colder so maybe you've got a point?

mine is the same way! i had my flip flops on saturday and when i went to take them off my feet were so swollen that it was actually kind of hard to get them off. then they wouldnt go back on again at all..

im giving it today to see if it happens again, but if not i feel like maybe i should call the doctor. its super uncomfortable and im wondering if maybe i can just eats some extra spinach or something instead of taking the pill. there has to be an alternative that will prevent the swelling, right?

Rachel22, I was told to phone the hosputal the following day for my blood results

Queserasera - I've also been put on iron tablets as found I was anemic, my feet are slightly swollen majority of the time now but actually are less swollen compared to my extreme feet before taking the tablets... does that makes sense? If it continues maybe discuss with mw?

i thought that maybe it was the warm weather too, or maybe too much activity as the first day i was cleaning the house and got pretty warm. but i sit at work all day in an air conditioned office with my feet propped up under my desk drinking bottles of water...and the swelling is still horrific. :-/
