Recommendation for after a c-section

Hey everyone!!

I thought I'd pass along one extra thing to toss into your hospital bag if you plan on having a c-section. I'd also confirm with your dr or MW first to confirm that it's ok to take after the surgery.

I had to have a c-section due to complications and afterward, I was very uncomfortable. I found out after the surgery that the dr blows air into the incision (at least they do at the hospitals in my area) to make sure that they only cut what needs to be cut. Then a nurse pushes on your abdomen to bring baby towards the hole. After you are all sewn up, the air you had in your body before, plus the air that was blown into you disperses all over your body. You'll wake up with tense, sore shoulders due to air being stuck up there.

It takes several days for the air to make it's way down to where it can escape, and you end up tooting all day long.

When I complained to my dr about the gas, she recommended that I take either GasX or Beano to help with the gas problems. It helped me, so I thought it might help you, too, if you plan on having a c-section.

Here in the states, they want you to pass gas. After everyone of my kids they kept coming and asking me if I had passed gas yet. I never passed gas but since my Dr seems to be obsessed with me having gas, I'm going to lie! LOL

They want you to pass gas after surgery here because your colon is usually the last thing to "wake up" from the anesthetic. They are afraid if you don't pass gas at the hospital then they will send you home and you'll develop a bowel obstruction.

I've had several abdominal surgeries where they do blow air in there so they can see what they are doing. The trapped air can be excrutiating and I never thought to take Gas-X. Thanks for the tip!

At the hospital where my friend had a c-section, they wouldn't even release her without knowing that she was passing gas a certain amount per hour. Lol... It was weird. They did push the issue with me as well, but they didn't say I couldn't go home unless I did it! Haha...

My dr who suggested the GasX or Beano to me told me that I had to pass gas for 24 hours, but after that I could take the GasX/Beano to help relieve the pressure inside. Unfortunately I never got any before I left the hospital. Oh well, maybe next time!

I highly suggest it. I do hope everyone gets the kind of birth they want but knowing a little about c-sections is a good thing and won't hurt you.

Much of the pain involved in a C-section is the gas pains. It is pertinent to pass the gas.

After my first, I didn't and went home 4 days after still not going to the bathroom. A few days after I finally felt like going but, TMI, it took a long time and it was almost obstructed and it was like having another baby.
