pain relief?!

Just a general question, I was wondering about pain relief and what anybody would recommend? I've heard so many different stories about everything, and I'm having trouble knowing what's true and what's not, so some advice would be really helpful? Ahh only 5 weeks and 5 days left now! xxxx

It's up to you hun. Personally I want to go through labour using as little drugs as possible so I'm going to be using my TENs machine and the pool, I might try G&A but that's about it. xx

I think you should just go with how your labour goes, if your coping well with just g&a then brill, i didnt get on with gas and air, i had pethidine and epidural but i was in labour for 46 hours, the pethidine they advised me to have to sleep because i wouldnt have the energy to push, and the epidural was great at the time couldnt feel much after that at all, was brill, but i didnt like not being able to move after.
This time im hoping for the pool, but if i have another long labour i wouldnt hesitate having another epidural, its def personal choice

my plan is to go with it. i just got a TENs machine, so that, the pool/bath, gas and air, and pethedine. i always wondered what other pain relief is on offer. i really really dont want an epidural. the thought of it makes me feel sick, and i know even in pain, i wont eant one.

I think it's sensible to keep your options open - after all if this is your first you have absolutely no idea what labour feels like and how you will respond.

This is my first, and I'm hoping for a fairly natural labour using breathing techniques, TENs, birthing pool and gas & air. However, I am not against trying other things if that is what I feel I need at the time.

The best thing you can do is to read up on your options so that you know about all the different things available and can make informed decisions if and when you need to.

I was induced with my first pregnancy. I had pethidine, epidural and gas and air at the last minute. I went in to be induced on the Saturday morning and had him on the Monday night. Having the epidural allowed me to sleep for the first time on the Monday so I was a bit more prepared for the birth come the end. Each pregnancy is different and everyone copes with pain differently. Im hoping to go into labour naturally this time x I would just keep your options open and see how it all goes. x

Epidural worked great for me, no pain at all and no tearing, i tried the tens but it made me go crazy, like little pins and needles buzzing in my back and didnt do nothing for the pain, i had to rip it of, found it annoying but i suppose some people may find it works.

You could try raspberry leaf tea, I'm drinking 3 cups a day, not sure if it works or not but apparently it's supposed to make your cervix stronger and your contractions more efficient, so you're not in labour for as long. I started getting braxton hicks after my first cup so it's definitely doing something!

Also I've started to massage my perineum twice a day, which is supposed to minimise tearing.

Other than that, I'm afraid to say that every labour is different so I guess it's just down to how your body copes with it on the day.. I'm hoping for a drug free birth and the only pain relief I want is tens, water birth and possibly g&a - but am keeping an open mind, if things get a bit hairy then I'll just go with the flow and take whatever they offer me!!

xx
