When to call the hospital?

Was just wondering when it finally does happen, when do you call the hospital. I know your not supposed to go till contractions are 3-4 mins apart and lasting 50ish seconds... but do you call them as soon as you start having contractions.. or just call them when you're leaving to go there?

In my parentcraft class they said once you're sure you are in labour you should call them just so they know to expect you later on. Figure I may as well get my DH to do the honours though (as I am the osrt of idiot who would stress about when to phone and what to say too much!)

Then all being well you can stay at home till contractions are min long and 5 mins apart - but they say you'll kind of know yourself when it's time / you can't wait anymore.

Thanks ladies.. not sure why i've only just started thinking of this stuff now!!! We only moved toour new house two weeks ago though and have a further trip to the hospital than we did at our last place... it woul dhave been 10 mins in a taxi so i was quite chilled about that. Plus if i'd gone and they sent me home it would have been no big deal. Here we're a 45 min 50 quid taxi ride from the hospital so don't really wanna risk going early and being sent home.... would cost too much :-)
