35wk Scan-Big Baby With A Big Head! Eeeek!!! (long)

Just been to see my consultant for 35wk apt, scan & strep B swap. As soon as Doc saw me she made a 'wow' noise about the size of my bump! Then she did the scan and measured the head and said that my LO has a very big head!!! She said there is no way I should be induced at any point as if labour is started before LO is ready then the head could get in the wrong position and there could be trouble... that was the first thing....!

She then said that baby is fine but is measuring very big & estimated weight is getting towards 6.5 pounds already - which is more like 37wks pregnant. She has booked me in for fetal monitoring 2 weeks today and she said that if the baby's weight stabilises then I can try a natural birth but if she keeps growing then she will recommend a C-section as she thinks I will have trouble pushing out a large baby due to my size - my pelvis is quite narrow apparently...

I asked if I would be able to have an epidural if I wanted to during labour and she actually laughed and said 'you will definately need an epidural with the size of your baby's head!!!!' HA BLOODY HA!!!!! My poor twinkle!!!!! Thats not very reassuring!!!!!

So, I have to wait for 2 weeks and then she will decide what is best. I also asked what their % rate of natural births vs c-sections at the hospital is (its private) and she said its about 50/50.

Sorry its such a long post... Doc said that big babies often come early... Im not scared about the pain of labour as long as LO is healthy and delivered safely then I will suck it all up - Im just worried about the state my twinkle is going to be left in, and will I ever want to DTD again!!!!!

Any advice/experience with big babies/big heads!!!

my lo was estimated at 6lbs at 35 weeks with a 97th percentile size head too. and my doctor isn't concerned at all with me having a vaginal birth. i am being induced on friday at 39wks too. i swear every single doctor has a different opinion about every little thing. apparently i have a narrow pelvis as well and with my first ended up successfully having him vaginally. he weighed 8lbs 10ozs. at 31 wks this lo did weigh supposedly 4lbs 9ozs and the ultra sound tech went on about how HUGE he was and scared me. then the next scan with a different tech, she wasn't all that worried or bothered.

everybody keeps saying bigger babies are usually easier to birth too!! i love big babies. they seem not quite as fragile. it's gonna be ok!! xoxo

I was estimated at 35 weeks a big baby. At 35 weeks she was measuring 39 weeks. I had a section booked for 39 weeks as she was breach. Was told to expect 10lb plus and she was a nice 8lb9oz. its all estimated. She has a big head and still does.. Her head is on the top percentile. She is 7 months and has to wear 9-12 months hats.

My daughter was 8lb 13oz, and she too has a mahoosive head...but I had her naturally on just gas and air, and I only had a graze (no serious tearing) - poke your midwife in the eye if she tries to worry you again!

Try not to worry about estimated sizes - on one antenatal check with my son they terrified me by saying he was huge, on the next they said he wasn't growing normally, that he was too small and then booked me in for a growth scan; I didn't know whether I was coming or going. When he popped out he was a healthy (average) 8lbs exactly.

It'll all be good! xxx

Hi hun. Sounds like quite a scary doctor. Grace was delivered at 35 weeks and she was 5lb 12oz. They had told me 1 weeks earlier that she 6lb 8oz, which she clearly wasn't. It is just an estimate.
On the other thing, my friend is 4ft 11 and tiny and she has naturally delivered two babies without a problem both her son and her daughter were 9lb plus. She didn't have an epidural and she didn't tear either xx

if your baby put on half a pound a week until you gave birth, she would be 8lbs, which is quite a nice weight! i had a scan at 34 weeks and oliver was estimated at 6.5lbs then - his head was the size of a 39 week baby! i was terrified. he came out weighing 8lb 11oz and with a head measurement which is now above the 99.6th centile, and although i tore while giving birth they were internal lacerations which have healed well and my perineum is intact. in fact, i'm expecting no lasting damage down there! don't worry.. and don't be forced into a c-section if that's not what you want. afterall your hospital sounds like they have high c-section rates anyway so they may be more ready to recommend one where others wouldn't. good luck and try not to worry! xx

I had my 1st son at 27weeks he weighed 3lbs I had major trouble pushing him out to the point where i needed help and had foceps and stitches. when I had my second son I asked to have a c section because the last was birth was so bad plus I didnt even know if id make full term anyway but I did and he weighed 7lbs2oz. am pregnant with my 3rd son and I have also been told been told that this baby is big! I opted to try for a natural and see how it goes I have been asked to have a scan at 34weeks so am hoping everything will b ok. my baby going by the 20 weeks scan has short legs, a big belly and a big head! hehe

good luck and I hope everything goes well for you both xx

I wouldn't worry, 6.5lbs isn't HUGE at this stage!

Bigger babies are supposed to come out easier as there head puts more effective pressure on the cervix which makes it dilate quicker and your contractions more effective or something.

My sister and my cousin both have big babies and we're all only 5ft2 and very tiny and neither tore or had any problems!

Sounds like your hospital are wanting you to go for a C-Section for their convenience!
