Babies position..can you tell!?

i went to my MW the other day for my appt. and she felt my belly and said the baby is head down.
i on the other hand feel like baby is transverse. i only feel movement below or right at my belly button, hardly ever above it. and i get these tickling little fingers or feet it feels like on the lower sides right above my hip.
does anyone know if there's any way to find out yourself?
and do babies still have enough room at 31 weeks to move about and change positions?
thanks!

at my 28 week appt. dr. said baby was head down, i rarely feel her down low, every once in a while i'll feel a strange sweep really low but mostly she is at my belly button or up high or on my sides.

fiveoyea- I feel the hiccups really low as well. Does that mean the baby is head down?

Have a look at the Spinning Babies website - there's some info on Belly Mapping, and how to tell what position your LO is in. I find it quite tricky though!

Tha sounds to me like your baby is head down. Twiddly fingers at your hips (their hands of often exploring round their faces and heads). The kicks below belly button sounds like the baby probably has straight legs so that the feet and knees are relatively low.

Transverse feels different (I've had many weeks of transverse with both babies!). You can feel the firmness of the spine circling the bottom half of your bump and all the action is higher up. Transverse babies tend to kick high so feet in diaphragm and ribs right across the full width of your body rather than on one side.

Of course babies can change positions so when your MW feels at your appointment unless the baby is engaged there is the possiblity of it moving again after your appointment. But I do think what you describe sounds head down, probably with the spine anterior/left as the kicks are on the right.

I feel some minor movement low down, but the vast majority (maybe 90%) is felt either right behind my belly button or to the right of it. Occasionally its been higher but I'm quite a tall girl and there is lots of room and the uterus doesn't go that much higher than my belly button

tonight all the stretching/squirming is happening to the right of my belly button with some flutters/smaller movement lower down

am hoping they're still head down - the MW thought they were at the 28 and 31w check up. Off to see her again on Tuesday
