Hey there, ladies. Just got back from my appointment with my midwife and my iron levels have dropped a bit more from the last time they were checked, which is becoming usual for me. What are your iron levels at and have they increased or decreased throughout pregnancy?
Mine so far are:
14.8 @ 7+3
13.8 @ 14+6
12.8 @ 28
11.7 @ 33+4
Should I be concerned at all at the rate my levels are dropping or is this totally normal? Also, what are the recommended iron levels to stay at?
from what I know, if it's below 10,5 then you have to take iron vitamins
so I don't think you should worry
Of course it's dropping
during third tri, the baby takes a lot iron and calcium from the mother
It's very very normal for hemoglobin levels to drop in pregnancy primarily due to hemodilution... The plasma volume (clear fluidy) part of your blood increases dramatically and your red blood cells which carry the hemoglobin tend not to increase at the same rate. Pre-pregnancy your levels should be above 12. During pregnancy they should be above 11.0, so yours are still fine.
Yeah, she probably should keep testing to be on the safe side. My last one was 10.6 and apparently they treat at 10.5 but when I went back to see my mw she put me on iron tablets anyway because I've just been feeling so rubbish lately. xx
if your level is over 11 then everything is ok.. if under.. then you need tablets.. mine was 9.9 at 28 weeks.. not sure what it is now.. i had bloods done a few weeks ago... the tablets only usually move your iron levels up by 1 point each month.. :S very slow.. xx
