Mold

A couple weeks ago our basement flooded...a lot. A huge storm came and our basement ended up having at least 2 inches of water in it. My husband removed the water within 24 hours and set huge fans up all over the basement to dry it out. I stayed away from the basement as he was afraid that I would slip on the tile, and there wasn't really much I could do anyway....

A couple of days with the fans on CONSTANTLY, I ended up walking downstairs to get something that I needed....the basement smelled horrid!! When my husband came home from work, I told him that something needed to be done, that there had to be mold somewhere as I had never smelled something so disgusting in my life. So, he starts seeking out the worst smelling areas (there was no visible mold, btw)....

Once he identified the worst places, he started stripping away the baseboard, and there was black mold behind the wood....he removed everything and cleaned up the cement that was behind the contaminated areas. After he cleaned these areas, the basement smelled much better, but I told him that he needed to make sure that the rest of the basement was clear before I would go downstairs again.

We know the mold didn't go up the walls as he checked that when he was taking the baseboard out....

anyway, I had to go down to the basement again yesterday, and while I was down there I smelled mold again---not anywhere near as horrid smelling as it was before, and it is not in the same area. I said something to DH about it, and he said that he had noticed the smell too, and I told him it needed to get fixed, and he said he knew....but didn't do anything about it. I meant that I wanted it handled ASAP....

anyway, I was looking up things online this morning (it's just a little before 8 AM now), and the things that are online about toxic (if this is the toxic kind) of mold with pregnant women and infants makes me want to just have a mental breakdown. I am going to immediately doing to get on DH when he gets home to fix this TONIGHT, regardless of how tired he is....but he won't be home for another 8 hours....it makes me want to just take care of it myself, but I don't think that's safe either. I am also scared that damage may have already been done to the baby----please tell me that baby will be ok!!

I am just a mess right now and so scared!

I mean, it would be a bad idea for me to try to clean these areas myself, right?

Anyone had any experience with this??

I'd just avoid the area until your husband can finish clearing it up - have him use loads of bleach to really kill all of of the molds. If the smells/mold just keeps coming back I'd hire a professional.

Just my 2 cents - just keep clear of the area.

Hang in there!

I wouldnt stress too much - I thought it was thick black mold that was bad that has been around for months / years due to damp spores getting into your body.

The strong cleaning products with mold prevention are extremely strong and toxic take your breathe away so it would be best if you can get your OH to do it even if it will be the w.e before he can sort it.

Best not to go into basement x

I would stay away from basement, But you have hardly been down there so I think you and baby are okay. You might want to hire someone to look at it just to make sure all is gone

We had bad black mould in our bedroom. The whole outside facing wall was covered we cleaned it off with mould killer stuff. Its like a water you paint on. Then we got some anti mould sealant which was like a thick white paste that you paint on and it stops anymore mould coming though Try to see if you can find anything like that to help it stop coming back. The make I got was Jeyes for the mould killer and a Polyfila mould sealant
