Ibuprofen During Third Trimester?

I'm wondering if one ibuprofen would be okay as tylenol doesn't help me at all and I just had my braces worked on causing my mouth to be in extreme pain. Has anyone else taken ibuprofen during pregnancy?

I've heard that after 34 weeks its a no no. I can't remember why, but its one of those meds you can take in small doses in the second part of your pregnancy, but not the third.

It is actually used as a tocolytic to try and help stop pre term labour, as long as the mom is before 34 weeks.

I would def. ask your dr I know I was on high doses of it in my 2nd trimester but it's not recommended for most of the pregnancy.

I was at the docs yesterday for a sinus infection and she told me I could take paracetamol but not ibuprofen.

this might be useful.

"Ibuprofen isn't recommended during the third trimester for several reasons. Most important, it may cause a passage in the baby's heart to close prematurely, possibly leading to heart or lung damage or even death. Taking ibuprofen or other NSAIDs in the last few weeks of pregnancy has also been linked to low amniotic fluid levels. And there's some concern that these medications may delay or prolong labor."

Definitely a no-no while pregnant. I have a sprained ankle and both the ER doctors and my OB has stressed to me that "even though ibuprofen would be ideal for the pain, you can only take acetaminophen while pregnant".

If you are suffering a lot of pain even on the Tylenol/Paracetamol see your doctor. They can often prescribe codeine to take along with the acetaminophen which gives some extra muscle to deal with the pain.

Good luck!

Yea I read about ibuprofen causing heart problems after posting and settled on taking a tylenol which didn't help. I generally don't like taking meds anyway so I'm just gonna suck it up and deal with the pain.
