Thanks Aliss, I have heard of walking epidural but for some reason my hospital does not offer one. I will ask in my next labor & birthing class about it.

Hiya

With my first baby i had an epidural...and my labour was 28 hours long. I had to have vontoose (sp?) as i couldnt feel the pain to push to and i was so tired.
After she was born, i couldnt get up with her for hours and it was awful.

My second labour was 6 hours and i onyl had gas and air. It was a far better experience. And i was in the shower 45 minutes after he was born! And home after 5 hours.

The pain of labour really differs.
With my first, it was the worst pain id ever felt, i thought i was being ripped apart.
But with my second it was like very bad cramps and it was bearable.

I was induced and didn't have an epidural, I had 1 shot pethadine 30mins before she was born and 10min gas and air. Honestly - the pain was really bad and I was in agony, on a scale of 1-10 I'd say 10 but I'm a wimp! I begged until my last breath for an epidural but labour was too fast and she was born before anyone could give me it but now i'm glad that I didn't have it. My waters were broke at about 2pm and I was in active labour for 3 and a half hours and my pushing stage was only 5-10mins and i reckon it'd been a lot longer if I'd have had the epidural!

I think just stay open minded to any kind of pain relief and do what you feel most comfortable. I know next time around I'll be asking for an epidural if I can get one.

I wanted an epidural but by the time they actually checked me i was fully dilated. I was very much the same as you in my birth plans. i wanted to do as much as I could on gas and air but put on my notes that I would like them to bear in mind that I might request an epidural. Maybe you can do the same? See how you get on with the gas and air. If you're really struggling then you will have the option there.

Unfortunately I'm in the US and gas and air is not available here or I'd be totally be asking for it. I'll know more what pain management options I can have next week though.
