a bit off topic: US government shutdown - I'll be SCREWED!
I had totally forgotten that this was up in the air because I've been so preoccupied with other things. I haven't been watching the news at all and I've only just remembered about it because a friend posted something on FB about it. If this shutdown goes through, I'll have to drop out of nursing school and attempt to find a half decent job in this terrible economy! My parents won't even have money to help me out because they depend 100% on the government for their source of income, just like I do. My mother does not work because she has arthritis and fibromyalgia, my father is retired from the Navy but is still a government employee just employed as a civilian. He will loose his job, and who knows if he will still get his pension. He transferred his GI bill to me so the government pays my school tuition plus give me a monthly allowance which is the money I live off of. My OH's mortgage is backed by the government - it's a low income loan and the government subsidizes the money he can't afford to pay monthly for the mortgage. I've read that federally-backed home loans will stop, so I'll literally loose everything. I'm so worried! I'm also on WIC to help cover the cost of essential food, will this be discontinued as well? I can't believe how our country is going down the toilet.
Sounds like you really are in a bad situation - I'm sure others will tell you the same, but it seems like you rely a lot on government assistance.
Services like the ones you utilize are being cut left and right, so you are correct, you are going to have to find other options. The first step would be to talk to your social worker or your case worker. You shouldn't panic, but you need to be reasonable and realistic about the situation.
You are 28 weeks pregnant, you could still work to support your family. It's not an ideal situation, and certainly not glamorous, but you understand that sometimes we all have to just do what has to be done to put food on the table. Your WIC should still continue, but you need to look at other options too for some kind of non-government assistance income.
I'm so sorry this is such a bad situation for you - but the sooner you take action to prevent a really big life catastrophe, the better off you and your family will be. You can totally handle this!
Unfortunately I don't think that the future of government programs that you utilize are in any good shape at all - and a lot of them are going to be slashed soon, and even more in the future.
Hey there.. I wouldnt worry to much, from past history typically when a shut down occurs its only for a few days... should not impact you much at all honestly.. just stay positive, I am sure it will all work out just fine. You dont need to stress yourself right now
once i have my RN license and have my own source of income i won't rely on the government anymore, but my parents always will. it's a scary thought. If WIC were to be cut out, that's fine, but VA benefits should never be cut out. My family sacrificed 22 years for our country, I shouldn't have to worry about whether or not I'm going to receive those benefits.
i certainly hope it will only be a few days and won't impact me, my family or any other families out there. it'd be so sad to see my father loose his job after sacrificing half his life and STILL being loyal to our government. I know there was a shut down back in 95 but I was way too young to remember it or have any idea how it affected people.
My husband is an employee of the government and is also worried as this would effect him receiving his paycheck or not. I too, work for a public school so also wonder how this will effect pay etc.... You are not the only one in worry over this. No paycheck=no bills being paid. One thing that we have done, thank goodness, is stock up on a variety of items we may need.
your mom should be okay. i read that disability wont stop. most government programs like wic will go on with money they have on hand. hope this helps. I know it sucks being dependent on the government but its also necessary for some people in this economy. Nobody should be judging on this. Keep your head up and you'll be fine.
